Ghostbusters - Ghostbusters is an American science fiction - Fantasy - Comedy directed by Ivan Reitman from the year 1984th
action
The three less than successful parapsychologists Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond "Ray" Stantz and Dr. Egon Spengler are kicked out of their university. Nevertheless, shortly before that, they achieved breakthroughs in their field in the area of ghost searching and fighting. With this knowledge, they set up a private ghost hunter agency in New York . Your business is getting off to a very slow start. Due to the rapid increase in paranormal phenomena in the city, their services are needed more and more and, due to numerous jobs, they can hire another employee, Winston Zeddemore, as a ghost hunter in addition to a secretary.
The Ghostbusters are soon faced with their most difficult task when Gozer, the destroyer, a god who (according to the film) was worshiped by the Sumerians and Hittites in ancient Mesopotamia , is about to, with the help of the demigod Zuul (the "gatekeeper") ) and the demon Vinz Clortho (the "Key Master") to return to our world.
A temple on the roof of an Art Deco skyscraper, which was designed as a dimensional gate by the insane architect and Gozer worshiper Ivo Shandor, is the scene of the great confrontation and the climax of the film plot.
In the subplot, a love story unfolds between Dr. Venkman and Dana Barrett, who lives in the skyscraper and is also admired by her neighbor, the somewhat eccentric tax advisor Louis Tully. During the course of the film, Dana and Louis transform themselves under the influence of Gozer into the gatekeeper and the key master, who enable the return of their god, and take the form of demons. As Gozer prepares to attack the city, he gives the Ghostbusters the choice of which shape to take. One of them accidentally chooses the "Marshmallow Man" (a fictional marshmallow advertising character ), and immediately a huge, smiling marshmallow monster attacks. The Ghostbusters manage to destroy it by crossing the energy beams of their proton packs, causing a powerful explosion that blows Gozer and destroys the demons that have taken possession of Dana and Louis. In the end, the Ghostbusters emerge victorious from the building and Venkman and Dana kiss.
background
With a budget of US $ 31 million (including US $ 5.6 million for special effects), Ghostbusters grossed US $ 291.6 million worldwide and was one of the ten most successful films of all time. The film opened in American cinemas on June 8, 1984. After its German theatrical release on January 25, 1985, over 4 million viewers saw the film.
development
Dan Aykroyd's first draft was set in the future and the Ghostbusters were already well established in it. The Ghostbusters were originally intended to be played by John Belushi , Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy . Harold Ramis, who rewrote the screenplay with Dan Aykroyd, wanted to act in the film himself and Bill Murray finally took over the part of John Belushi, who died in 1982. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis had previously appeared in I believe me smooch a moose! worked with the director Ivan Reitman. The role of Louis Tully was offered to John Candy , who declined. Paul Reubens was considered for the role of Ivo Shandor. Grace Jones was supposed to play Gozer, because of her hairstyle the line of dialogue "Aiming at her brush" was written. An earlier draft of the script from July 6, 1983 contains an alternative (unfilmed) ending: Winston drives up in a limousine in front of the new Ghostbusters International company building. Egon and Janine are getting married in Las Vegas and Louis is their best man. Ray revisits the "dream" ghost. Peter is in her apartment with Dana, this time a chick is hatching from the eggs.
Columbia Pictures secured the naming rights of Filmation , which had produced a series under the title The Ghost Busters in 1975 (later: Filmation Ghostbusters , 1986-1988).
occupation
Sigourney Weaver was eager to play to show her comedic side. Ron Jeremy can be seen in an extra role. The actress of the dream spirit (Kymberly Mistress) had undressed for Playboy in 1981 . Reginald VelJohnson plays a prison guard. The Yugoslav model Slavitza Jovan (Gozer) was dubbed by Paddi Edwards. Director Ivan Reitman voiced Slimer and Zuul.
Locations
Shooting started in October 1983. Shooting was first in New York and then in Los Angeles . The film begins with the New York Public Library , but most of the basement scenes were made in the Los Angeles Public Library. The university is Columbia University , which did not want to be mentioned in the film. The Ghostbusters headquarters is located at 14 North Moore Street and is the FDNY fire station . A fire station in Los Angeles was used for the interior shots. Dana's apartment is located at 55 Central Park West. The Sedgewick Hotel is the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, with the scenes in the hallways in the studio. The short sequence at the Rockefeller Center near the Prometheus statue was made without filming permission. In the City Hall the Ghostbusters met the mayor. The Marshmallow Man shows up at Columbus Circle . The final scenes were filmed at Columbia Ranch and New York. Shooting ended in February 1984.
ECTO-1
The ghost hunter's emergency vehicle is an ambulance based on a 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor . Only 200 of these vehicles were built and only one converted vehicle was available for filming. 20 years later, the original vehicle was extensively restored and the process for the first Blu-ray release of the film was documented. The name ECTO-1 relates to the parapsychological term ectoplasm (English: "ectoplasm").
logo
Michael C. Gross designed the film logo based on a concept by Dan Aykroyd. Casper's rightsholders sued unsuccessfully because they saw similarities to their character, Fatso . A study found that the logo (after that of Coca-Cola ) is the second most famous in the world.
Characters
Peter Venkman is the ghost hunters' mouth, Ray Stantz is the heart, Egon Spengler is the brain and Winston Zeddemore is the average guy. The ghost Slimer got its name from the cartoon series and was still called Onion Head for the film . Ivan Reitman compared him to Bluto from the film I think a horse will kick me , so for him Slimer was the ghost of John Belushi.
music
The film's theme song , written and sung by Ray Parker, Jr. , became an international hit and was number one in the US for three weeks and number two in the UK for three weeks on the official charts.
synchronization
The German dubbing was based on a dubbing book by Arne Elsholtz under his dialogue direction on behalf of Berliner Synchron . During the translation, some phrases and terms that were perceived as offensive were clearly defused, for example "dropping off" was translated as "I'll pick something up" and " bitch " was translated as "bee". Furthermore, terms and names were changed, for example J. Edgar Hoover to Josef Stalin .

Reviews
“The astonishing perfection of the special effects is inversely related to the intelligence of the story and the dramaturgy. A trick show that is taking on a life of its own, the intended comedy of which is only faintly suspected; at least entertaining, even if the German dubbing is an additional burden. "
“Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis (the authors of the film) and a constantly improvising Bill Murray tackle ghosts that were great for the time, but above all they impress with dry one-liners that made the action slap really amusing. [...] Conclusion: Fast monster fun from the depths of the 80s. "
“It is certain that the 'Ghostbusters', as a frivolous comedy, would not have found the audience of millions they needed to be able to compete with the Spielberg adventures and Lucas space battles. Director Ivan Reitman seems to have speculated more and more on the pure vandalism in the last viewer when he burns everything short and sweet towards the end of the film. The German synchronization takes care of the rest. It drives out the ghosts of the German language. "
"Ivan Reitman's comedy, brimming with humor and dazzling dialogues, [is] a bitter parody of our sensational, immoral times and of the few human specimens that populate it."
Awards
For the 1985 Academy Awards , Richard Edlund , John Bruno, Mark Vargo and Chuck Gaspar were nominated in the Visual Effects category and Ray Parker Jr. in the Original Song category . The film won a Saturn Award in 1985 for best fantasy film.

The remake Ghostbusters (2016) flopped at the box office. Ghostbusters: Legacy is slated to be released in theaters inMarch 2021. This will play in the same universe as the original franchise . A prequel to the original film could emergein the following years.
The cartoon series The Real Ghostbusters (1986-1991) and Extreme Ghostbusters (1997) refer to the first two films in some episodes, but play in their own canon . Sony Pictures Animation is working on an animated film and has plans for a series, Ghostbusters: Ecto Force .
