The Munich-Giesing train station (colloquially usually called Giesinger Bahnhof ) is a train station in the Obergiesing district of the Bavarian capital of Munich and a station for the Munich S-Bahn and U-Bahn . It is located at the Munich East-Deisenhofen railway , the railway line Munich-Giesing cross road , which is about the level of the cemetery Perlacher timber branches off from the line Munich East Deisenhofen east direction, and the second main line of the subway Munich. The station is served daily by around 280 Munich S-Bahn trains.

history

Entrance building around 1900

Giesing station was built on October 10, 1898 on the newly created Munich East – Deisenhofen railway. At that time, the station was a little more than a kilometer away from what was then Giesing and surrounded by meadows and fields. At that time, the community of Giesing had been incorporated into the urban area since 1854 . On January 26, 1901, the station was named Munich-Giesing . In 1904 another railway line was built via Perlach to Kreuzstrasse , which ran from the Ostbahnhof through the Giesinger Bahnhof and at the cemetery at Perlacher Forst, it left the existing line from Munich East to Deisenhofen with a branch to the east.

From 1912 a tram depot stood adjacent to the station , which was used until 1972 and then shut down and demolished. It was not until the late 1920s and the National Socialist era that Giesing grew right up to the train station and the fields and meadows along Deisenhofener Strasse, which connected Giesing's center with the train station, were built with spacious apartment blocks. In addition, the lines were electrified during this time. On May 28, 1972, the station was integrated into the Munich S-Bahn network.

Giesinger train station

Since 1985 the station building has been one of the last suburban station buildings in Munich under monument protection and has been used as the district culture center Giesinger Bahnhof and restaurant Die Gleiswirtschaft since 2004 . On October 18, 1980, the main line 2 of the Munich subway was opened with the Giesing subway station below the S-Bahn station . The bus station integrated into the station forecourt was temporarily relocated to the street due to the redesign of the square and the adjacent area along the railway line. A health center and a senior citizens' home were built at Giesing train station by mid-2009, although the previously existing P + R parking lot was no longer available. Since 2010 the bus station has been back on the station forecourt.

S-Bahn station

The S-Bahn station has four tracks, one of which is used without a platform for freight traffic and two for S-Bahn traffic. The fourth track with the platform serves as a sideline and is occasionally used for special trains. A special feature of the station is that the route between the Ostbahnhof and the junction at the cemetery at Perlacher Forst is operated in left-hand traffic and not, as is usual with Deutsche Bahn , in right -hand traffic . This happens because the S-Bahn trains have to change direction at the Ostbahnhof, thus avoiding time-consuming changing of the tracks.

Subway station

View of the platform level of the underground station

The underground station is designed in a similar way to all other underground stations on the U2, which opened in 1980, but as a special feature there are openings to the barrier level in the platform ceiling. The back track walls are clad with large, vertically arranged wall panels, which are kept in beige. The floor is covered with Isar pebbles and the ceiling, which is equipped with two (formerly four) continuous light strips, is covered with aluminum slats. There are stairs to the mezzanine floor at both ends and in the middle of the platform, which is straight along its entire length. The subsequently built-in elevator connects the S-Bahn platform directly to the subway platform via the access level, and another elevator leads from the access level to the station forecourt. The mezzanine floor extends the entire length of the underground station, which is rather unusual in Munich. The reason for this is the widely spaced entrances and the fact that the S-Bahn line has to be crossed.

traffic

With the underground station opened in 1980, the station became a central hub for local public transport in Giesing. The S-Bahn lines S3 and S7, the underground lines U2 and U7 as well as the metro bus line 54 and the tram line 18 meet here. The reinforcement line U7, which has existed since December 12, 2011, only runs in the Rush hour. A bus station is integrated in the station forecourt, where the Munich Metrobus routes 59 and amplifier trips on route 54, the city bus routes 139 and 147 and the regional bus route 220 stop.
