Sitzendorf lies on the Schmida . The area of ​​the market town covers 61.83 square kilometers, around seven percent of the area is forested.

history

There are no documents in the parish itself for the period up to 1794, because a major fire on March 20, 1790 destroyed all documents of the parish and the parish. The history up to this point in time can therefore only be reconstructed from documents that are kept outside the community. The oldest existing log in the community archive is dated November 11, 1793. Since then, logs and documents have existed without gaps and were processed in the contribution to the local history by Leo Maria Trapp, in the local history by Ferdinand Mayer and most recently in the homeland book by Peter Aichinger-Rosenberger.

In the Lower Austrian district conquered by the German rulers together with the Austrian margraves against the Moravians and Hungarians in the 11th century , donations were made to various families of counts. Among them were the Sieghardinger from the Bavarian Chiemgau, who mainly developed the area of ​​Sitzendorf, Frauendorf and Pillichsdorf economically.

Around 1020, Count Sieghard V. vom Chiemgau (also called Sicco or Sizzo) founded Sitzendorf as Angerdorf or Kirchweiler. The name of the place is derived from this Sicco or Sizzo, first Sicindorf, then Sizendorff and finally Sitzendorf. Place names such as Siezenheim (near Salzburg ), Sitzenhart (cadastral community of Sitzendorf), Sitzenberg or Sieghartskirchen also bear witness to the wide-ranging rights of ownership and rule of the Sieghardinger .

The first written mention of Sitzendorf as a place and also as a parish comes from the year 1141, when Bishop Reginbert von Passau consecrated the parish church Groß in today's municipality Hollabrunn and awarded it the tithe to Großnondorf of the municipality Guntersdorf , which is part of the parish of Sitzendorf belonged.

In 1241 the patronage and bailiwick of the church in Sitzendorf came from Count Palatine Rapoto III. from Bavaria , from the house of the Counts of Ortenberg , to the Bavarian Baumburg Monastery and has since been the center of the monastic possessions in the area. The fact that in Sitzendorf - for example in the coat of arms of the municipality - the " Passau Wolf " can be found again and again has its origin here.

Now began a very eventful history, and many well-known genders changed owners of the manorial rights.

The originally highly free Kuenringers, who lived in the neighboring Waldviertel , appeared early on as feudal lords . During the time of their rule, a moated castle was built and the rectangular main square of Sitzendorf was laid out in the first half of the 13th century.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 2,208 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 2,170 inhabitants, in 1981 2,380 and in 1971 2,738 inhabitants.
