history

The place was created in the early 1960s as a secret military settlement in connection with the planned stationing of units of the Strategic Missile Forces (RWSN) of the Soviet Army . In 1965, the 4th " Harbin " missile division of the Transbaikal Military District, founded in 1961, was finally moved there and the place was given the status of an urban-type settlement under the code name Tschita-46 .

Initially, ICBMs of the type R-16 , later also the type UR-100 (SS-11) and medium-range missiles of the type RSD-10 (SS-20) were stationed in an area of 400 km² and were launched several times for test purposes. Around 1990 a large number of these missiles were destroyed here in accordance with the agreements of the START-1 and the INF treaty .

In 1994 the existence of the place was officially confirmed with its inclusion in the SATO directory; at the same time it received its current name (Russian adjective for gora , mountain ). In the same year, the deployment of modern ICBMs of the Topol-M (SS-27) type began.

In 2002 the missile division was dissolved in its previous form; However, Gorny remains the location of the Russian Armed Forces .
