European Handball Championship 2002 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 5th European Handball Championship 2002 for men . 36 nations were involved in the qualification, of which 11 teams qualified for the finals in Sweden . Only the Swedish men's national handball team was directly qualified as defending champions of the EM 2000 .

qualification

20 teams took part in the qualification. These had to compete against each other in five groups of four teams each. The group winners and runners-up were eligible to start in the play-off round, where a further twelve teams were added.

Play-off round

In addition to the group winners and runners-up in the qualification, there were the finalists Russia, Spain, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Portugal, Norway, Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Ukraine of the European Championship 2000 as well as the seeded teams from Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary which determined the eleven participants for the final round in the knockout system.
