The Hamburg University of Music and Theater ( HfMT Hamburg ) is an art school in Hamburg . With around 1,300 students, it is one of the largest music-oriented universities in Germany and offers artistic and academic training in all areas of music and theater.
location
The school's central facilities are located in the Budge-Palais , a villa built in 1884 by Hamburg architect Martin Haller on Harvestehuder Weg 12. Further facilities are located in adjacent new buildings from the 1970s, all near the Outer Alster in the Rotherbaum district ( Eimsbüttel district ) .
The theater academy is located on Hebebrandstrasse in City Nord. The theater academy is expected to have a new place of work together with the Junge Schauspielhaus in the new theater district on Barmbeker Wiesendamm by the winter semester 2020/21.
history
The college emerged from the private drama school of Annemarie Marks-Rocke and Eduard Marks and was founded under the name Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in 1950. Its first director was Philipp Jarnach . At that time the university was housed in several buildings and did not have its own building. After a course in Protestant church music was established in 1954, the university was able to move to the Budge Palais in 1956. In 1967 the university was renamed the State University of Music and Performing Arts , so that the theater and opera courses could also be identified in their names.
In 1970 a new building was added to the Budge Palais. The historic hall of mirrors, which had previously been used for chamber music performances by the students, was demolished in 1980, moved to the Museum of Art and Commerce in Hamburg and rebuilt true to the original in 1987, where it is still used for concerts today. In 1991 the university was renamed again and has since been called the University of Music and Theater . In 2003 the building was expanded again to make room for the library.
Under the presidency of Elmar Lampson, which has existed since 2004, the HfMT is one of the founding members of the network of music academies for quality management and teaching development. In August 2014, the HfMT was also successfully certified as a "family-friendly university".
At the beginning of 2015, the HfMT signed a partnership agreement with the four largest music academies in Beijing and Shanghai as a sign of solidarity with the Chinese music academies. The heart of this agreement is a joint one-year “International Master’s Course” and a program for visiting students.
Since 1982 the University of Music and Theater has also hosted the “Eventim- Popkurs ” (originally “Modellversuch Popularmusik”), the first contact course for popular music in Germany, from which a large number of successful musicians and bands have emerged to this day, including the singer and Actress Ute Lemper and the German rock band Wir sind Helden .
