Kitzeck im Sausal is a municipality near the city of Leibnitz in the state of Styria . The community has 1229 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and is located in the Sausal region in the political district of Leibnitz . The highest wine-growing place in Austria is in the municipality .
geography
Kitzeck im Sausal lies between the Koralpe in the west, the Little Hungarian Plain in the east, the mountains of Upper Styria in the north and the mountain ridges of Slovenia in the south. The area of the municipality is 1,629 ha .

history
In the district of Trebian, east of Kitzeck, inexplicable events are said to have taken place around 1925. This "Spuk von Trebian" ended after an intervention by the spiritualist Maria Silbert in 1927. This story was taken up by Claudia Rossbacher in her detective novel "Steirerrausch" from 2019.
Population development
With a few exceptions, the population of Kitzeck has decreased almost steadily since 1869, when the community had 1,754 inhabitants. In 2001, 1198 people lived in the community. The loss of residents was due to emigration. In 2011 Kitzeck had 1208 inhabitants again.

economy
The vines thrive on slopes that are very steep. The vineyard area is around 130 hectares. There are numerous wine taverns and restaurants in Kitzeck .
