legend

The Cistercian monastery of Maulbronn , founded in 1147, succeeded in building a closed territory comprising a good twenty villages at the end of the 15th century in the tension between Württemberg, Baden and the Electoral Palatinate , which was supplemented by free float in more than a hundred locations. In 1504, during the War of the Landshut Succession , Ulrich von Württemberg conquered the monastery, which was under the patronage of the Palatinate, and incorporated the area into the Duchy of Württemberg. In the course of the Reformation the monastery was closed in 1534 and finally in 1556 and converted into a Protestant monastery school. The former monastery property was incorporated into the administrative structure as the Maulbronn Monastery Office . Among the numerous monastery offices, the office of Maulbronn did not only occupy a prominent position because of its size. In addition to the prelate, it also sent a secular representative to the assembly of estates, and in the 18th century was in fact treated as a secular office. So it was only logical not to dissolve the office during the administrative reform carried out from 1806 - like all other monastery offices - but to convert it into a “regular” secular office. The district, which was subordinate to the Landvogtei an der Enz from 1810 and then from 1818 to 1924, was subordinate to the Neckar District, bordered by the administrative offices of Brackenheim , Vaihingen and Leonberg and the Grand Duchy of Baden .

Former gentlemen

In 1813, after the regional reform was completed, the district was made up exclusively of old Württemberg towns. In addition to the old monastery office, which had to cede some places on the edge of Baden or to the head offices of Leonberg and Vaihingen, there were places that had belonged to the following offices in 1800:

  • Herrenalb monastery office: Derdingen staff office with a stake in Diefenbach and Freudenstein;
  • Oberamt Güglingen : Sternenfels;
  • Rentkammer : Half of Enzberg.
