Lamphun ( Thai : ลำพูน , [ lām.pʰūːn ]) is a province ( Changwat ) in the northern region of Thailand . The capital of Lamphun Province is also called Lamphun .
geography
The province is about 650 kilometers north of the capital Bangkok and 25 kilometers south of Chiang Mai .
The mountain foothills of the Himalayas determine the landscape of the province, through which the Mae Nam Ping ( Ping River ) flows.

climate
The climate is tropical-monsoonal with moderate influences. Temperatures fluctuate between up to 38 ° C in the hot months before the rainy season and close to freezing point on the clear winter nights. The maximum temperature in 2008 was 40.5 ° C, the lowest temperature was measured at 9.3 ° C. On 97 rainy days fell 737.2 mm of precipitation in the same year .
history
The city of Lamphun was founded as Hariphunchai around 660 and was the capital of the northernmost Mon kingdom. The region came under the control of the Khmer around 1000 until it was finally conquered by Mengrai in 1283 , who incorporated it into his newly established kingdom of Lan Na .

economy
In 2009, the "Gross Provincial Product" (was GDP ) of the province of 63,731 million baht . The official minimum wage in the province has been 236 baht per day (about 5 euros) since April 1, 2012.
The province has 1,988 factories with 78,338 workers (as of 2010) and thus a relatively high industrial sector.

The industry that made the largest contribution to the province's economic output in 2011 was agriculture with 21.928 billion baht, followed by manufacturing with 18.786 billion baht, and wholesale and retail with 7.426 billion baht.

According to the 2000 census data, 99.8% of the population were Thai citizens, 99.5% Buddhists, and 0.2% Muslims. 6% spoke one of the languages of the so-called hill tribes .

Lamphun does not have its own airport, the nearest airport is in Chiang Mai .
Rail transport
The province has 6 train stations on the Thai Northern Railway (Bangkok – Chiang Mai): Pa Sao, Lamphun, Nong Lom, Sala Mae Tha, Tha Chomphu and Khun Tan.
Symbols
The seal of the province shows the famous golden chedi of Wat Phrathat Haripunchai , the main temple of Lamphun. The chedi is also said to house relics of Buddha .
The local plant is the Palasabaum ( Butea monosperma ) as well as the rain tree ( Samanea Saman ).
The motto of Lamphun Province is:
- The city of the outstanding temple Prathat Hariphunchai,
- Phra Rod, the holy Buddha image is admired by everyone,
- Many longan gardens, good garlic ,
- and good manners are the glory of the province,
- Queen Chamadevi of Hariphunchai , that was the ancient name of the kingdom.

- Wat Phra That Hariphunchai - Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) built around 1100 on the site of the former royal palace in Lamphun on the Kwang River, the 46-meter-high chedi covered with gold leaf is visible from afar
- Wat Chamadevi - Buddhist temple with tiered pyramidal chedi from the Mon period

Administrative units
Provincial Administration
The province of Lamphun is divided into eight districts ( Amphoe ). The districts are further divided into 51 parishes ( Tambon ) and 551 villages ( Muban ).

Local administration
A provincial administrative organization ( บริหาร ส่วน จังหวัด , อบ จ for short , Ongkan Borihan suan Changwat ; English Provincial Administrative Organization , PAO) exists for the entire area of the province .
There is one city ( เทศบาล เมือง - Thesaban Mueang ) in the province : Lamphun ( เทศบาล เมือง ลำพูน ). There are also 23 small towns ( เทศบาล ตำบล - Thesaban Tambon ).
