The list of coats of arms with the scallop includes municipal coats of arms as well as other coats of arms and logos with the scallop . As scallops or scallops are two closely related species of mussels referred both to the genus Pecten belong.

The name scallop goes back to Saint James , the patron saint of pilgrims , whose distinguishing mark is the shell. Therefore, the scallop is also known as the symbol of pilgrims, especially those on the Camino de Santiago . The Christian pilgrims of the Middle Ages used the scallop to draw water. A common custom among pilgrims to St. James was to end the pilgrimage 60 kilometers further at Cap Finisterre in order to collect a real scallop shell from the sea. Worn as a pilgrim sign on the hat band or on the belt, it is historically linked to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela to commemorate the visit to the tomb of St. James. The shell was more than just a souvenir. After returning home, it secured the reputation of its wearer, and some had the mussel placed in their grave.
