Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup 2019

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup 2019 was a season of the FEI Nations Cup for show jumpers . He stood in a hundred and ten year tradition of Nations Cup competitions in show jumping .

Course of the tournament series

The 2019 season marked the second season for Longines as the series' title sponsor.

There were unchanged seven (theoretical) divisions distributed around the world: Europe 1, Europe 2, North and Central America, South America, Middle East, Asia / Australasia and Africa. However, since there were no corresponding Nations Cup tournaments in Asia / Australasia, Africa and South America, only four leagues were organized.

The Nations Cups of the series should be played on the last day of the Nations Cup tournament. The tournaments had to bear the name "Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup ™ of ...", this could be extended to include additional names (usually the traditional name of the tournament).

Valuation points were awarded at every Nations Cup of the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup. The points system revised for the 2014 season was used:

space 1 2 3 4th 5 6th 7th 8th 9 10 Further
Points 100 90 80 70 60 55 50 45 40 35 no points

In the event of equal penalties from second place at the end of the Nations Cup, the number of evaluation points achieved by the teams was added up to the 2018 season and divided by the number of teams (example: two teams achieved fourth place. Thus, 80 points were awarded for fourth place and 70 points for fifth place added and divided by two. Both teams received 75 points). The set of rules was changed with the 2019 season: Since then, in the event of a tie in penalties from second place onwards, the addition of the time required by the three riders rated per nation decides on the placement.

The number of Nations Cups in which the teams could collect points differed depending on the division: In the European Division 1, each national association had to choose four Nations Cups at the beginning of the season. The teams of the North and Central America Division, however, were able to collect points in all three tournaments of the division.

The 2019 Nations Cup season kicked off in mid-February, and the last Nations Cup before the final took place in August. A final tournament closed the season. Eighteen teams qualified for the final: seven from Europe 1, two from Europe 2, two from North and Central America, two from South America, two from the Middle East, two from Asia / Australasia and one team from Africa. If the host country of the final did not qualify (which was the case), it could start as an additional team.

Middle East Division

In 2019, too, the Middle East division only comprised a single Nations Cup. It was the United Arab Emirates' Nations Cup. This was organized as part of the CSIO  5 * tournament President of UAE Show Jumping Cup , which took place from February 20 to 23, 2019. The venue was the Al Forsan International Sports Resort in Abu Dhabi .

The Nations Cup tournament started on a Wednesday and ended on Saturday. As the last test of the tournament, the Nations Cup was held from 4:30 p.m. local time. Saudi Arabia finished the first round of the course designed by Santiago Varela as the best Arab team in third place. With four and one penalty point, respectively, Ireland and Germany were in the first two places.

After Saudi Arabia's first team rider was eliminated in the second round, the three results of his teammates counted. With ten additional penalty points, Saudi Arabia slipped to fourth place. The United Arab Emirates team also got 18 penalty points in the overall result. However, due to a better time of its three riders counting in the second lap, the team achieved third place. Ireland received nine additional penalty points in the second round. The German team had already won the race before the last rider, and Philipp Weishaupt didn't even have to go to the start.

Abdel Said was the only rider with two zero-error rides to receive the additional prize money of 50,000 euros for the best rider. With two rides with only one time penalty each, Sven Schluesselburg was the second best rider in the test in his first Nations Cup start for Germany.

The teams of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia qualified as the best teams in the division for the Nations Cup final.

North and Central America Divisions

The tournament calendar of the North and Central America Division (full name: North and Central America & Caribbean Division ) continued to include the Nations Cups of the three large North American states. All three Nations Cup tournaments were held in the first half of the year.

United States Nations Cup

After four years in Ocala , the US stage of the Nations Cup returned to Wellington, Florida . Due to the ongoing sponsorship dispute, the Nations Cup tournament supported by Rolex as part of the Winter Equestrian Festival (February 26 to March 3, 2019) was not considered. Therefore, the CSIO 5 * tournament "Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup ™ of United States of America" was held two weeks earlier (from February 13th to 17th, 2019). This event was located two miles east of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center of the Winter Equestrian Festival at Deeridge Farms. This equestrian facility is owned by Jeremy Jacobs, who also owns the Boston Bruins ice hockey franchise and was previously co-organizer of the Winter Equestrian Festival.

The Nations Cup was held on February 17, 2019 from 1:30 p.m., the prize money was 290,000 US dollars. With no mistakes and already eight penalty points ahead of the other teams, Mexico was in the lead after the first round. The United States and Ireland, Mexico's direct pursuers with eight penalty points each, received additional penalty points in the second round and thus fell back to third and fourth place. The Israeli team, made up of riders of different nationalities of Jewish origin, which started in 2019 for the first time in a nation-wide competition and aimed to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games, kept a clean slate in the second round. With a total of nine penalty points, Israel achieved second place. The victory went to Mexico despite an obstacle error in the second lap. The Mexicans competed in Wellington with a young team, all riders were younger than 30 years.

Nations Cup of Mexico

The second leg of the North and Central American Division took place in Xalapa , a city a good 280 km east of Mexico City. The Mexican Nations Cup tournament was held from May 2nd to 5th, 2019, and the venue was Club Hipico Coapexpan.

The Nations Cup started at 12 noon and was held on the last day of the tournament. The field of participants was manageable, there were only three nations at the start. The course designer was the Brazilian Guilherme Nogueira Jorge, who also designed the jumping courses for the 2016 Summer Olympics. After the first round, Canada was third with 14 penalty points, the United States and Mexico were tied with 9 penalty points.

In the last place of Canada nothing changed after the second round. Team boss Stany van Paesschen's Mexican team had a good starting position in the second lap after three riders, compared to the United States they had already won a lead of two penalty points. Last starter for the United States was Alex Granato with the 11-year-old gelding Little Carl W . While the couple was able to achieve top placements in North America in a row in the previous months (e.g. victory in the World Cup competition at Wellington-Deeridge Farm), Xalapa did not go well for the two: With 12 penalty points, they again put the US-Americans out of the game. With that victory for Mexico was certain, Salvador Oñate no longer needed to start.

Nations Cup of Canada

As in the United States, there are two Nations Cup show jumping tournaments in Canada. The tournament from Langley (British Columbia), advertised as CSIO 5 *, was part of the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup. It was held at Thunderbird Show Park from May 30th to June 2nd, 2019.

Langley offered the hosts' team the last chance to qualify for the Nations Cup final. While Mexico was already certain to be the finalist, Canada had to win to make it into the final.

In the first round of the Nations Cup, which was on the program on June 2nd from 2 p.m., the Canadians really did shine: They were in the lead with no penalty points. Three teams, including the Americans competing for the starting place, were in second place with two obstacle errors.

Ireland was able to pull away from the second-placed teams in the second round, without further mistakes they secured second place. The first three riders of Canada got just four penalty points in the second round. So Mario Deslauriers no longer had to go to the start, Canada's home win was already certain. So the focus was on the US team. This got four penalty points and came third in the final result. This placement was too good, the United States remained in second place in the North and Central American divisions with a ten-point lead, thus securing the right to start in Barcelona.

Overall ranking of the North and Central American Division

The teams of the North and Central American divisions were close to each other in the end of the season. Mexico secured first place with two wins in a row. The United States in second place also received a starting place at the Nations Cup final in Barcelona.

Europe Division 1

While the number of teams in European Division 1 remained the same at ten, the number of tournaments in the division shrank: After only one year, Šamorín had to withdraw his Nations Cup tournament from the European top league, the tournament did not take place for financial reasons. As a result, at the end of 2018, it was decided to carry out Europe Division 1 in 2019 with only seven stations.

The following nations were entitled to start:

  1. The nine best teams in Europe Division 1 of the previous year (Belgium, Ireland, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Great Britain, Sweden, Germany and Italy)
  2. The best teams from the qualifying test of the Europe Division 2 in Budapest 2018 (Austria)

Nations Cup of France

Due to the failure of the Šamorín Nations Cup, the European Division 1 started the new season late, in mid-May. The French Nations Cup kicked off. This was organized by La Baule-Escoublac as part of the CSIO 5 * , the tournament took place from May 16 to 19, 2019.

In La Baule, the Nations Cup did not take place on the last day of the tournament, as planned by the FEI, but again on Friday afternoon. Switzerland and Belgium finished the first round in first place with only one obstacle error each, Ireland followed with five penalty points. The German team was sixth after the first half of the test: Simone Blum and Alice , who won the Grand Prix two days later, had to accept four penalty points. The best German rider in the first round was Sven Schlüsselburg in his second Nations Cup.

Almost all teams were able to improve in the second round, but Canada had to record a drop in performance: Already in eighth place in the first round, Canada's team received five times as many penalty points as the second worst team in the second round (Great Britain with six penalty points). The second round was mixed for Germany: while Schluesselburg delivers the cancellation result, his three teammates improved. Overall, it stayed sixth.

The mistake of his final rider Gregory Wathelet was expensive for Belgium. Its result thus became the result of the cancellation, instead the time penalty of Pieter Devos counted. With just this one penalty point more than the Swiss who again remained flawless, it was just enough for second place. Switzerland, on the other hand, started the Nations Cup season with a win, as in the previous year.

Nations Cup of Switzerland

The venue for the Swiss Nations Cup tournament is St. Gallen . The CSIO Switzerland took place from May 30th to June 2nd, 2019 in the Grundmoos stadium. The second stage of the European Division 1 was held on the Sunday of the tournament (June 2nd) from 3 p.m.

St. Gallen was the first tournament for Austria's team in the European Division 1. Shortly before, the Austrians, who were already considered outsiders, had bad news: Max Kühner, the only Austrian among the top 100 show jumpers, had to operate after a fall and was consequently canceled for large parts of the Nations Cup season. In the first round Austria came in seventh place with 22 penalty points. While the Swiss came third after the first round with four penalty points, Italy and France were initially able to make no mistakes.

In the second round things didn't go any better for the Austrians: Anna Markel's 21 penalty points could be canceled. But their three team-mates also got eight or more penalty points each, so they finished the test in last place. The hosts were able to shine at the front of the field: Steve Guerdat didn't even have to start on the second lap after the team had already won three zero-error laps. In addition, Switzerland benefited from the weakness of its main competitors: France and Italy had team results of four penalty points. A playoff of the three leading nations was required.

Steve Guerdat had to show off in the jump-off. Unexpectedly he made a mistake with his mare Bianca . Giulia Martinengo Marquet needed a longer play-off time for Italy, but took the lead without a mistake. France's new Chef d'Equipe, Thierry Pomel , selected Guillaume Foutrier as the jump rider. After he had put his 10-year-old gelding Valdocco des Caps in the second round of the cancellation result, he returned the favor in the jump-off: He made no mistakes and was a good half a second faster than Martinengo Marquet. Thus, Foutrier France secured victory in St. Gallen.

Nations Cup of Poland

Poland's Nations Cup tournament in Sopot formed the framework for the third stage of the European top division. For the fifth time in a row, the tournament, which was held from June 13 to 16, 2019, was advertised as CSIO 5 *. The venue was the Hipodrom Sopot, which is located directly on the city limits to Gdansk .

The Nations Cup, held on June 16, started unusually early, with the first rider starting at 10:40 a.m. With three consecutive rides without penalty points, the Dutch were able to take the lead in the first round of the Nations Cup. But the outcome of the Nations Cup was still completely open at this point, three teams followed in second place with only four penalty points.

Austria's team was changed in two positions compared to St. Gallen, but success did not materialize in Sopot either. With 72 penalty points from both rounds, they collected more than three times as many penalty points as the Poles placed seventh. One of six riders who remained clear in both rounds (double clear round) was Daniel Deußer. In his second Nations Cup start since his return to the championship squad, he delivered the best performance in the German team. This was able to finish the test in fourth place with five penalty points from each lap. Surprisingly behind in fifth place the Dutch finished: There was no drop in performance for a single rider, but with four penalty points for each of the four riders, the discarded result was of little use and the Netherlands got 12 penalty points.

The Irish succeeded, the Dutch had succeeded in the first lap: Three rides without mistakes ensured that Ireland would either move into a jump-off or had already won, so Bertram Allen did not even have to start. Belgium had to tremble after a mistake by their third rider, but a faultless lap by Pieter Devos brought them into a now necessary jump-off. France also had the chance, although their first rider Simon Delestre had withdrawn before the second round. But a mistake by Alexis Deroubaix and Timon d'Aure caused them to drop to third. Paul O'Shea attacked for Ireland in the jump-off, but an obstacle error put Belgium in the cards. Pieter Devos rode at a more cautious pace, he managed another zero-error ride and thus the victory for Belgium.

Nations Cup of the Netherlands

In 2019, Rotterdam will host the European Show Jumping Championships . Therefore, the fourth stage of the Europa Division 1 did not take place at the original venue. The Nations Cup tournament of the Netherlands was instead held as part of the CSI Twente, which in 2019 was named CHIO Twente. The tournament, organized in the Tubbergen district of Geesteren, took place from June 19 to 23, 2019.

Although taking place on a large grass pitch, the course of the Nations Cup on the Sunday of the tournament, devised by the course designer Henk Jan Drabbe, was characterized by many 180 and 270 degree turns. The time allowed was generous, so that even on rides with refusals there were only individual time penalties. Of the 32 starters in the first round, only four riders failed to make mistakes. With two of these zero-error rides, Brazil was in the lead after the first lap, the hosts followed with four penalty points more in second place. The weekend had started well for the German team, in the Grand Prix on Friday they finished second, fourth and fifth. But in the first round of the Nations Cup, things went just as badly as in the previous European Nations Cups: After two rides with refusals, you were initially third from the bottom.

The Austrians also finished their third Nations Cup without a chance in last place and were almost certainly relegated. The German team was able to improve significantly in the second round, but also benefited greatly from the mistakes of other nations. Germany finished the test in fourth place. Surprisingly, the Spanish team, made up of largely unknown riders, came in third. Until the third rider, the Dutch had a chance of victory. But after Marc Houtzager made an obstacle error with his 12-year-old gelding Calimero , Brazil's third rider had an ideal starting position: Pedro Junqueira Muylaert was able to make a jumping error after two of his team-mates had already made a mistake. This is exactly what he did, but this result was sufficient - Brazil was the winner ahead of time.

Nations Cup of Sweden

Sweden's Nations Cup tournament in show jumping and dressage is the Falsterbo Horse Show, which took place from July 11th to 14th in 2019. The event will be held in the town of Skanör med Falsterbo at the southwestern tip of Sweden .

The show jumping Nations Cup was held on the last day of the tournament from 1.30 p.m. After the first round, Sweden was at the head of the field of eight teams, three of the hosts' four riders had cleared. The other teams received almost all time penalty points, so France and Switzerland shared second place with five penalty points after half of the test.

The Austrian team recorded their best result of the Nations Cup season in the second lap: With two rides without mistakes, the Austrians got only five penalty points in the second lap. In total, the team got 15 penalty points and thus rank six. Max Kühner, who had recovered and who had no obstacle faults with Alfa Jordan , and Felix Koller, who delivered his best Nations Cup result of the season with just one jumping fault, made their contribution to this result .

While France fell back to fifth place in the second lap, Italy was able to work its way up to third with just two additional time penalties. The Swiss team was able to maintain its penalty point score from the first round, Steve Guerdat did not even have to start after three zero-error rides by his teammates. Sweden only had two faultless rides in the second lap, but still managed to win the Falsterbo Nations Cup with a total of four penalty points.

Nations Cup of Great Britain

The last two stations of the division took place in the British Isles. Great Britain hosted the Nations Cup tournament in Hickstead, West Sussex. The Royal International Horse Show took place from July 24th to 28th, 2019.

One weekend after the CHIO Aachen , most of the eight nations did not start their best team in the Nations Cup. In contrast, Sweden, which started late in the Nations Cup season, competed with a powerful team: In the first lap, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson did not even have to start after his teammates had made no mistakes. Ireland and Belgium followed after the first half of the test with four penalty points.

In the first lap, Amanda Derbyshire fell at the moat and was unable to start the second lap. The UK team, reduced to three riders, had no chance and came in last. A conciliatory conclusion in front of a home crowd was the ride of the British final rider, Ben Maher , who remained free of penalty points in both laps .

The composition of the German team had been affected in the run-up to several failures. Michael Jung, who made his Nations Cup debut here in show jumping, joined the squad just a few days earlier. In the first lap the German riders belonged to the top group right up to the last rider, but Patrick Stühlmeyer's ride failed completely after a refusal at the moat. Supplemented by time penalties, Stühlmeyer became a clear cancellation result. In the second round the moat became a problem obstacle for Johannes Ehning: His gelding C-Jay could not be persuaded to cross the moat even in the second attempt. Nevertheless, the riders of Brazil and the United States also made mistakes, so that Germany was fifth after the third rider of the second round. But Patrick Stühlmeyer and his stallion Chacgrano were also able to exhaust their capabilities in the second lap . With eight more penalty points, Germany fell back to seventh place.

Belgium fell significantly behind in the second round, so that only Ireland could compete with Sweden for victory. But even in the second round, the Swedes did not show any real weakness. Even before Bengtsson's ride, winning the test was certain. One month before the European Championships, Sweden achieved the third Nations Cup victory (after Falsterbo and Aachen) within three weeks.

Nations Cup of Ireland

The European Division 1 season ended less than two weeks before the European Championships . The last stage took place at the Irish Nations Cup tournament held in Dublin . The tournament lasted from August 7th to 11th, 2019, the Nations Cup was held on Friday afternoon.

In Dublin only seven nations competed in the Nations Cup. The Swedes, who were strong at the previous Nations Cups, competed in Dublin with a weaker team and finished last after the first round. The Mexicans who were victorious last year were brought to sixth place with only one penalty point less. Great Britain competed with several couples who had concentrated the rest of the season on the Global Champions Tour or League and was able to successfully demonstrate its capabilities for the first time this season. Without penalty points, the British were in the lead after the first round, four penalty points ahead of the second-placed Italians.

Most of the participating nations also suffered several penalty points in Dublin in the second round. But there was no change in those placed. With this victory, Great Britain also secured its place at the Nations Cup final in October.

Overall ranking Europe Division 1

From the European Division 1, the seven best-placed teams in the overall standings qualified directly for the Nations Cups final. The teams could each take part in four pre-determined nations' prizes. The evaluation points achieved there were completely included in the evaluation.

In 2019, no team dominated the European Division 1 for the entire season. Instead, six nations were close to each other with only small gaps. Between the teams from Switzerland and Italy with the same number of points, only the respective best placement (a victory for Switzerland) ultimately decided the top rank of the division. The other four nations, however, were clearly beaten, including the Netherlands, surprisingly. The series of weaker Nations Cup years continued for Germany and Great Britain, Austria, as expected, had no chance and was immediately relegated.

Europe Division 2

The Europe Division 2 included all European teams that did not qualify for the Europe Division 1 of 2019.

The European Division 2 consisted of a single (final) tournament, which was held in July near Athens. The nations were able to qualify for this tournament within four groups. The rules for this were not laid down by the FEI, but by the European Equestrian Federation (EEF). The nations were divided as follows:

group Nations Starting places for Athens Qualified nations
Group A Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Israel and Ukraine 2 Bulgaria and Romania
Group B Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus 1 Russia
Group C Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Portugal and Spain 3 Portugal, Spain and Hungary
Group D Norway, Denmark, Poland, Finland and Luxembourg 2 Norway and Poland

Unlike in the previous year, each qualifying Nations Cup only served one group as a qualification test. In three of the four groups, only one exam was available to qualify for the division finals:

  • Group A: CSIO 2 * Boschurishte
  • Group B: CSIO 2 * Moscow
  • Group C: CSIO 3 * Lisbon
  • Group D: CSIO 3 * Drammen, CSIO 2 * Järvenpää and CSIO 3 * Uggerhalne

Nations Cup of Athens

In the previous year, the Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Center was still the venue for a CSIO 2 * qualification tournament for groups A and B. In 2019, 15 years after the Olympic Games in Athens , the equestrian center located in the outskirts of Athens was the location of the special competition Division 2. The CSIO 5 * Nationwide Prize Tournament took place from July 25th to 28th, 2019.

Although not yet qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games, Russia waived a start in Athens and thus the opportunity to qualify for the Nations Cup final in 2019. Supplemented by host Greece, the starting field in the Athens Nations Cup thus comprised eight nations with quite different backgrounds Level of performance. Of the participating nations, only Spain and Poland had already been part of the Europe Division 1.

Spain had traveled to Athens with a team of riders who were little known internationally, with 28 penalty points it was only enough for the lower midfield of the final result. Hungary, which will host the European Championships in 2021 , brought a team with balanced performance to the start: In addition to two zero-error rides in the first round, the riders always ended their rides with four penalty points. Poland was particularly convincing in the second round. After three faultless rides, the final Polish rider didn't even have to go to the start, Poland came in third.

Portugal came in second with five rides without penalty points and a final result of four penalty points. Norway was promoted to Division 1. Without counting penalty points, the team, which consisted almost entirely of riders from the Gulliksen family, won the Nations Cup. In addition to the Norwegians, the Portuguese also qualified for the Nations Cup final in second place.

final

General

For the seventh time in a row, Barcelona has been chosen to host the Nations Cup finals. The CSIO Barcelona took place from October 3 to 6, 2019 on the grounds of the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona .

As part of the Nations Cup final, a starting place for the 2020 Summer Olympics was also awarded. The best team in the final exam that had not yet qualified for Tokyo received this starting place.

Teams

According to the Nations Cup regulations, 18 teams from different parts of the world qualified for the final.

These were the following teams from the divisions:

From the regions without Nations Cup divisions, additional teams were named for the final tournament:

In addition, Spain received a starting place from hosts. From the Middle East, the two qualified nations from Jordan and Syria as possible successors did not start in Barcelona. For the Arab nations, the focus is instead on the Group F Olympic qualifying tournament that will take place a week later in Rabat.

New Zealand, which had already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in August, also announced that it would not participate. Two of the freed starting positions were assigned to the nations placed eighth and ninth in the Europe Division 1, the Netherlands and Germany.

Results

Qualification test

The qualifying test for the Nations Cup Finals took place on Thursday afternoon (October 3) in 2019. The starting field for the competition with one round in which no prize money was awarded comprised 18 teams. The time allowed for the course to be mastered was extremely tight. A good half of the riders received time penalty points for exceeding the 79-second mark. Nevertheless, the Spanish course designer Santiago Varela was praised because his course did not overwhelm the weaker nations, but still worked out the best teams for the final test.

Belgium was one of the few nations that did not miss a time. The 2018 final winners won the qualifying test with just four penalty points. The performance of Colombia was also strong, as Ireland kept its chance at the Olympic starting place by entering the final exam.

In contrast to the Nations Cups, in which from the 2019 season the times of the teams generally played a role in the ranking, the qualification test was only scored according to penalty points. Only in the event of a tie between eighth and ninth place was the time required by the teams used. Germany benefited from the fast rides by Marcus Ehning and Daniel Deußer with just over 75 seconds each, making it the fastest team in this group.

The test went surprisingly bad for Brazil, in whose team three riders and two horses of the gold medal team of the Pan American Games 2019 started. With 22 starting points, they clearly missed the final exam. Even Great Britain could not follow the rising form curve at the end of the Europe Division 1, again without Ben Maher and Scott Brash. The British came in 14th with 21 penalty points.

Consolation test

The consolation test, the so-called Challenge Cup, also went unhappy for Egypt. After missing the Olympic chance by not qualifying for the final test (Egypt secured qualification for Tokyo a week later in Rabat), the African nation also finished the consolation test in last place. Norway, which had qualified for the Europe Division 1 of 2020 via the Europe Division 2, also struggled with the course and only came in eighth.

Overall, there were only a few faultless rides in the test. The United States, which, as in the previous year, failed to make it into the final exam, only came third in the consolation exam in 2019. Two months after the Pan American Games, 21-year-old Eve Jobs was again part of the US team, with four and zero penalty points she was the best US rider in the Nations Cup final. The US team shared third place with Great Britain and Brazil.

The Netherlands secured second place with a unified team performance. As the only team with two faultless rides, Spain, which was only allowed to participate in the Nations Cup final via the host's starting place, won its consolation test.

Final exam (Nations Cup Final 2019)

In the big final test, endowed with 1.25 million euros, course designer Santiago Varela set up a course that corresponded to that of an international championship and was worthy of the occasion. In contrast to the qualification test, the time allowed played a less important role. A special feature was the structure of the combinations: Already quite early in the course, as obstacles 4ab and 5ab, two double combinations followed one another in a straight line. After the middle part of the course with the open moat, it was also the final line. This began with the three-fold combination, at a distance from it on a straight line a steep jump, after which an oxer had to be overcome as the final jump in a slight left turn.

Of the first riders, only Olivier Philippaerts was without mistakes. Belgium thus confirmed its ambitions to win the Nations Cup final like last year. In the second riders of each team, Massimo Grossato (Italy) and Paul O'Shea (Ireland) succeeded in the zero-error round.

European champion Martin Fuchs managed the only Swiss clear round as the third rider of his team. Overall, this final test went unfortunate for Switzerland (seventh place). The course of the German show jumpers was similar: only the final rider Daniel Deußer was able to convince and, together with his stallion Tobago Z, confirmed his outstanding form with a faultless round.

Despite surprising 12-point rides by their top riders Simon Delestre and Lorenzo de Luca, France and Italy came in fifth and fourth. With the same team result, Sweden, benefiting from the fast rides by Henrik von Eckermann and Peder Fredricson, got bronze.

Already after the third rider it was clear that Ireland had secured the Olympic starting place for 2020 after its (for the Olympic qualification worthless) European Championship title in 2017 at the last qualification opportunity in Barcelona. Instead, her third rider Darragh Kenny rode more carefully and took a time penalty. This time penalty could be decisive at the end of the final test: Ireland's last rider Cian O'Connor made no mistakes and thus secured Ireland its chance to win the Nations Cup final in addition to the Olympic ticket. But Belgium was able to defend its title on its own, for this reason the final rider Grégory Wathelet should have made a mistake. But unlike the European Championships in August , Wathelet couldn't withstand the pressure in Barcelona. On the final line, his gray stallion Nevados ran past an obstacle and thus caused a refusal. The Irishman, managed by Rodrigo Pessoa, had won the title, worth over 400,000 euros.
