Luther's Path from 1521
The Lutherweg 1521 replicates the route that Martin Luther covered almost 500 years ago from the Reichstag in Worms to the Wartburg near Eisenach . In the spring of 1521 Luther most likely traveled on the old trade routes from Worms to Frankfurt and from there on the historical route through the short Hesse . In a narrow corridor, the modern pilgrimage and hiking trail Lutherweg 1521 is based on these streets and paths from Luther's time.
The distance
The Lutherweg 1521 runs for around 400 km through a varied natural landscape across Hesse . After starting in Worms and about 50 km through Rheinhessen on the RheinTerrassenWeg , the Lutherweg changes in 1521 at Oppenheim am Rhein to the right bank of the Rhine to Hesse. Through the Ried , the urban area of Frankfurt, the Wetterau , along the northwestern foothills of the Vogelsberg , through Waldhessen and the Seulingswald , the Lutherweg crosses the Werra in 1521 near Berka / Werra. After about 35 km through Thuringia , the destination, the Wartburg , is reached.
The Lutherweg 1521 crosses three federal states (Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Thuringia), three Protestant regional churches ( Hesse-Nassau , Kurhessen-Waldeck , Central Germany ), eight districts, two independent cities and another 37 independent communities with approx. 100 urban / Districts.
Monuments worth seeing, such as churches, monasteries, castles and palaces, bring a centuries-old history of faith to life. In addition, the former inner-German border is crossed. The memory of the peaceful revolution of 1989 is also included in Lutherweg 1521.
The Lutherweg Association in Hesse , based in Romrod, is responsible for the Lutherweg 1521 . The state of Hesse made financial resources available. In addition, the European Union, with EU funds , districts, municipalities as well as donors and sponsors contribute to the financing of the project.
A first section (Berka / Werra — Wartburg) was opened to the public on May 4, 2014. The Hessian sections (Friedewald - Trebur) were opened on May 14, 2017 a. a. by the Hessian Minister of Economics Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens), the President of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau, Volker Jung, and the Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck, Martin Hein. Together with the section in Rhineland-Palatinate (Oppenheim-Worms), all sections will be accessible in good time before the end of the Luther Decade 2008-2017.
The Lutherweg 1521 meets the Lutherweg Thuringia at the Wartburg . It is connected to the other seven Luther trails in Bavaria , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia .
