Macau City Hall

Macau is a French municipality with 4225 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Gironde in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Bordeaux and the canton of Le Sud-Médoc . The inhabitants are called Macaudais .

geography

Macau is located north of Bordeaux in the Médoc region at the mouth of the Garonne River . Macau is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Margaux-Cantenac in the north, Bayon-sur-Gironde in the northeast, Ambès in the east, Ludon-Médoc in the south, Le Pian-Médoc in the southwest, Arsac in the west and Labarde in the northwest.

Macau is located in the Haut-Médoc wine region .

history

The settlement has existed since Gallo-Roman times. Remnants of a Roman road have been found in the small town of Gironville. In the 9th century the place was destroyed by the Normans. In 1027 a document recorded that William V of Poitiers donated the Saint-Marie church and the Île Macau to the monastery of Saint-Croix in Bordeaux.
