Saint-Jean-d'Illac is about 16 kilometers west of Bordeaux . The river Jalle has its source here . Saint-Jean-d'Illac is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Médard-en-Jalles and Martignas-sur-Jalle in the north, Mérignac in the east, Pessac in the southeast, Cestas in the south, Marcheprime in the southwest, Lanton and Audenge in the west as well Le Temple in the northwest.

A small part of Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport is in the municipality.
