Bonnetan is a French municipality with 947 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine and belongs to the canton of Créon in Arrondissement Bordeaux . The municipality is located in the catchment area of ​​the city of Bordeaux .

Bonnetan is located in southwest France in the Entre deux mers area between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers , 14 kilometers east of Bordeaux, the capital of the Aquitaine region, and 7.4 kilometers northwest of the canton capital of Créon , at an average altitude of 67 meters above sea ​​level . history

Bonnetan was already settled in Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486 AD). And since that time surrounded by fields and vineyards . According to Ernest Nègre , the place name is also of Gallo-Roman origin and is composed of the personal name Bonnitus and the place name ending -anum . The parish church of Saint-Martin was built in the 12th century. The hamlet of La Loubière was a seigneurie in the Ancien Régime . A castle was built there in the 16th century.

1793 Bonnetan received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality. In 1801, through the administrative reform in the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821), the municipality was given the right to local self-government under the name Bonnetaut . The population increased from 275 at the time in 1968 to 810 in 2009.

Culture and sights

Saint Martin Church

Bonnetan is part of the Les Coteaux Bordelais municipal association . In May 2012, the seven member communities organized a free concert series called Eufonia with classical music for the first time . The series of events is to be repeated annually.

The 16th century castle La Loubière was enlarged in the 17th and 18th centuries. The agricultural buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The castle is privately owned and is now used as a hotel .

A 19th century lavoir stands on a branch of the Canteranne .

The patron saint of the 12th century Saint-Martin church is Martin of Tours . In 1664 the roof collapsed. It was then renewed. In 1890 the church was restored and a sacristy and a porch was added.
