Götzis is a market town with 11,765 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the state of Vorarlberg in the Feldkirch district and in the Kummenberg region on the border between the Upper and Lower Vorarlberg Rhine Valley.
geography
The core of the community Götzis lies in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley at an altitude of 448 meters. The municipality itself is between 410 m in the valley floor and 1645 m on the Hohe Kugel . 45.2% of the area is forested.

Neighboring communities
Götzis borders six other Vorarlberg municipalities. Of these, only the city of Hohenems is located in the Dornbirn district and the other five ( Fraxern , Klaus , Koblach , Mäder and Altach ) as well as the market town in the Feldkirch district. (The municipalities are given clockwise, starting in the north.)
history
Götzis is first mentioned in a document as Cazeses in the Rhaetian Imperial Surbar . The following spellings can also be found:

A modest village center was built around the old church around 1000 AD . In 1375 the county of Feldkirch was sold. Götzis came into the possession of the Habsburgs . On May 15, 1694 Götzis was raised to a market town . On January 1, 1801, Götzis and Altach were politically separated. Götzis became an independent municipality.
During the First World War (1914–1918) around 800 men from Götzis did military service, 152 Götzner fell or died then and in the following years from the consequences of the war. 239 Götzner died in World War II (1939–1945).
On April 29, 1945, French troops crossed the Vorarlberg border at Lochau and Hohenweiler . Before they could reach the Arlberg on May 6th, units of the Wehrmacht and the SS fought at Bregenz , Götzis, Bings and Dalaas , which also killed the civilian population and caused property damage.

The population is growing steadily as the birth balance is very positive. The migration balance is also positive for most of the years.

- Neu-Montfort castle ruins : Götzis' landmark was built on the northeastern foothills of the Therenberg above the village between 1311 and 1319. The castle was occupied by the federal government over the lake from 1405 to 1408 during the Appenzell War, making it one of the few castles that were not destroyed by the Appenzell people. The castle ruins now belong to the municipality of Götzis - the circular wall was restored in 1970 and in 1974/1975.
- Sonderbergschlösschen : built around 1561 by the canon Friedrich Sandholzer
- Jonas-Schlössle : The little castle, built in 1584 by Lienhart Jonas von Buch and Udelberg, is the former aristocratic residence of the Jonas family. In the building there is still a wooden coffered ceiling from the 16th century. The building was extensively renovated and restored between 2001 and 2004 and has since provided space for readings, chamber concerts, exhibitions, seminars, conferences and other events.
- St. Arbogast Education Center
- Kulturbühne Am Bach: Opened in 2000, it offers space for up to 600 people and is open for concerts, theater, readings, operettas, lectures, meetings and much more.
Sports
- All-around meeting Götzis : The annual venue for the all-around meeting of the best decathletes and heptathletes in the world takes place in the Möslestadion. The Mösle meeting is one of the most famous decathlon and heptathlon meetings of the season. The world record of 9026 points was set here in 2001 by the Czech Roman Šebrle .
- Wrestling: KSV Götzis has around 150 club members and is therefore one of the largest clubs in Götzis. Nikola Hartmann , the club's most successful wrestler, won five world and European titles. The founders of the association were August Fischer from Wolfurt and Ulrich Scheyer from Götzis.
- Luge: The RC-Schwab is one of Austria's successful racing luge clubs on the natural track. Various European and national champions emerged from this club.
- Volleyball: VC Götzis was founded in 1977 and is therefore one of the oldest volleyball clubs in Vorarlberg. Around 100 members play volleyball in a wide variety of age and ability groups. It is played in the hall, on grass and in the sand. One of the greatest sporting successes was qualifying for the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 2008/2009 season, the championship title in the women's regional league 2 was won.
- With the swimming pool in the Riebe , the municipality owns a public outdoor pool.
- The acrobat group Zurcaroh successfully participated in the America's Got Talent show at the end of May 2018 .
Economy and Infrastructure
In 2004 there were around 450 companies with around 3,600 employees in Götzis.
The largest and best-known companies with headquarters in Götzis include Mepla-Alfit, Sola Messwerkzeuge, Zech Fenster and Huber Tricot .
The Vorarlberg Business Park (VWP) and the Hopbach operating area are also important.
Götzis has a biomass heating plant with exhaust gas cleaning. The local heating network supplies community-owned objects, companies and residential buildings from the industrial area to the town center. As the operator of Nahwärme Götzis GmbH, companies based in Götzis are involved as private investors in addition to the municipality.
The newly planned town center, known as Am Garnmarkt, with around 100 companies and around 200 apartments, has been under construction on the former Huber Tricot site since 2007. (As of 2018)
traffic
Götzis is located directly on the Rheintal-Walgau motorway (A14) and has a train station on the Lindau – Bludenz railway line . Mainly trains of the S-Bahn Vorarlberg , which run every half hour, as well as individual regional express trains stop here.
In addition, several lines of the Landbus Oberes Rheintal and Landbus Unterland operate in and around Götzis . In addition, Götzis has owned a local bus for several years, which was expanded into the local bus on the Kumma in 2008 and since then has been connecting the communities around the eponymous Kummenberg , Götzis, Altach and Mäder with six lines .
In May 2019 Götzis passed the Bicycle Policy Audit (BYPAD) and received a positive assessment of the municipal cycling policy.
energy
Götzis is one of the 24 municipalities in Austria (as of March 2019) that received the highest award of the e5 energy project. This program for energy-efficient communities aims to promote the implementation of a modern energy and climate policy at community level.
education
Götzis owns a music middle school as well as the largest middle school in Vorarlberg and a general education secondary school with the BORG . There is also the Kathi Lampert School on the Garnmarkt. In Götzis there are also seven kindergartens, four elementary schools, an adult education center and a special education center.
