The college was founded in 1873 by the Catholic women's order Daughters of Christian Love by St. Vincent de Paul as a college for women. University courses for women were offered in 1912 and from 1914 onwards, there was cooperation with Dalhousie University . In 1925 the school received approval to offer its own degrees. In 1966 the name was changed to Mount Saint Vincent University and received state recognition from a university. Male students have also been admitted to the course since 1967.
Around 4,000 students are trained in Bachelor, Master and PhD programs. The Mount is a leader in online education, offering a variety of online programs for undergraduate and graduate degrees.
