history

The new mill and Neumühle settlement

Villa Elsterblick

The "New Mill" was built around 1345 as the second watermill in the area by a miller from the Knottenmühle opposite . In 1449 it was first mentioned in a document as "Newmöle". In 1663 the mill came into the possession of the Schaller family for almost 300 years, from which the former name "Schallermühle" is derived. The mill has been operated by the Sterner family since 1956, and the mill has been officially called "Sternermühle" since then.

Today's “Neumühle” settlement was built around the mill and later gave its name to the community and the district. In 1890 this was appointed by the "Association of Vogtland Mountain Associations" for summer resort and later a climatic health resort. After the establishment of the state of Thuringia on May 1, 1920 and the district division law passed in June 1922, the Greiz district was formed on October 1, 1922, into which Neumühle was initially incorporated as part of the Nitschareuth community.

Foundation of the Neumühle / Elster community

The Neumühle district is not part of the historical settlement landscape. Until 1960 the area belonged to four different communities: Nitschareuth, Tschirma , Waltersdorf and Kleinreinsdorf. This resulted from the earlier circumstance that each community had to grind its flour in its own mill. This resulted in a cluster of nearby settlements in the Elstertal that were far away from the respective places. As early as the second half of the 19th century, efforts were made to bring these together in a separate community. However, this failed due to the resistance of the surrounding places, which should have given up the corresponding areas.

It was not until a local committee of the National Front of the GDR founded in 1958 that the idea of a community of its own continued. In 1959, deliberations about defining the border took place, on January 18, 1960, the reorganization of the community was decided by the GDR Council of Ministers with retroactive effect to January 1, 1960. A mayor was only found after reunification . The following settlements became part of the new municipality:

Previous parish Settlements
Nitschareuth Neumühle, Bretmühle , Neuhammer , small portion of Knottengrund
Waltersdorf Knottengrund, crab mill
Kleinreinsdorf Green oak
Tschirma Lehnamühle

The former affiliations of the district can still be seen today. The individual settlements have only partially grown together and there is no center that has grown together.

Administrative community and incorporation

After German unification and the restoration of the Free State of Thuringia, administrative communities were formed for more effective administration . On January 22nd, 1992 the administrative community Neumühle / Elster consisting of Daßlitz , Kleinreinsdorf, Neugernsdorf , Neumühle / Elster, Nitschareuth and Waltersdorf was founded, whereby the community Neumühle / Elster became the seat of the administrative community. This was dissolved again on December 31, 1995.

On March 15, 1996, the city of Greiz became a fulfilling municipality for Neumühle / Elster. After exactly 60 years as an independent municipality, Neumühle / Elster was incorporated into the city of Greiz on December 31, 2019 as part of the regional reform in Thuringia .

traffic

Traffic connection

The district is connected to the surrounding area in all directions by roads. The L 2344 leads south to Greiz and the L 1085 in a west-east direction from Langenwetzendorf and the federal highway 92 to Teichwolframsdorf through the settlements Neumühle, Knottengrund and Krebsmühle. District roads continue to lead via Waltersdorf to Berga / Elster and connect to the Lehnamühle.

The Elstertalbahn runs through the Neumühle settlement and has a stop there. This is served hourly by regional express trains from DB Regio and regional trains from Vogtlandbahn . This gives the district a direct connection to Erfurt , Gera and Plauen . The current station building was erected in 1891. From 1922, a pedestrian tunnel continued to run under the tracks, but is now blocked. The crossing track built in 1926 has also been removed.

In bus traffic, PRG Greiz Neumühle serves lines 20 and 21. These provide connections to Greiz, Daßlitz and Teichwolframsdorf.

The Elster Bridge

The settlement area divided by the Weisse Elster was only connected to traffic for several centuries by a ford , which was impassable during floods. This neuralgic point was made independently passable in 1870 by means of a bridge privately financed by the owner of the Neue Mühle. It was destroyed by ice for the first time as early as 1871 and was rebuilt again and again in the decades that followed. The importance of the bridge increased after the grand opening of the Gera Süd – Weischlitz railway on July 17, 1875 and the opening of a post office on May 1, 1884.

The fourth Elsterbrücke, built in 1892, was financed by the state for the first time, but in 1945 it was blown up during World War II to stop the advancing American troops. This was only repaired later with wooden covering, which caused a high level of maintenance. Only in 2006 was this fifth bridge replaced by a new reinforced concrete bridge. It is part of the provincial road 1085.
