Upper Sorbian first names

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Upper Sorbian first names are first names that are used in the Upper Sorbian cultural area . So, unlike Germanic names or Slavic first names , they are primarily not defined linguistically , but culturally . Due to the diverse external influences to which the Upper Sorbian culture is exposed, the name inventory is also diverse and rich in spelling and phonology .

Examples of popular female first names are:

Bernadet , Borbora , Božena , Dana , Franciska , Hanka , Hańža , Christina , Jana , Jěwa , Katka , Julija , Lejna , Lenka , Lubina , Ludmila , Madlena , Marhata , Marja , Měrana , Pawlina , Rejza , Ruzalka , Sofija , Weronika , Wórša , Zusana

and for male:

Beno , Bjarnat , Bosćij , Dawid , Feliks , Handrij , Horisław , Jakub , January , Yuri , Korla , Klaws , Křesćan , Maćij , Marko , mercin , Michał , Miklaws , Pawol , Petr , Radom , Roman , Ščepán , Stanisław , Syman , Tomaš .

origin

The original Sorbian first names were exclusively of West Slavic origin; quite a few of them have survived to this day. Some are originally Sorbian, the best-known example is Lubina . Others, like Božena , are more common and can also be found in other West Slavic cultures.

Christianization then brought a variety of church names to the Sorbs. These include biblical names such as Hilža and Mato as well as names of saints such as Weronika and Měrćin .

In the course of time, German culture, from which first names of Germanic and non-Germanic origin were and are taken over, became more and more important for the use of first names. Examples are Robert , Dytar and Helga as well as Andrea , Diana and Tobias .

Finally, there are also some non-Sorbian Slavic names such as Bogna or Andrej . A possible reason for this could be a general interest in Slavic culture in the course of reflecting on the Slavic roots of the Sorbs.

A strict separation between the name sources is not always possible. So Jadwiga a non-Sorbian Slavic name of Germanic origin, while Maria is indeed taken from the Germans, but probably owe Christian reasons its popularity. Still other names have been adopted in several forms from different sources, for example the Sorbian Jěwa , the German Eva and the Polish (or Sorbian-German) Ewa , and between the Sorbian Borbora and the German Barbara there is the transitional form Barbora .

The wealth of Sorbian names was further increased by the diminutive . Originally only a modification of baptismal names for private use, they could become independent baptismal names. For example, the names Janka and Janika as well as Danko emerged from the names Jana and Daniel .

Orthography and declination

spelling

The influence of different cultures also affects the way names are spelled.

Some foreign names, such as Angelique , Bianca or Solveig as well as Enrico , Marcel or René , have been adopted unchanged in spelling and pronunciation, probably not directly from the country of origin, but with a detour via German culture.

However, most of the names are in Sorbian or German spelling. These are often identical. They can be classified if there are orthographic peculiarities of the respective language, such as Sorbian diacritics (č, ě, ł etc.) or German double consonants or vowels (tt, nn, au, ie etc.) Sorbian can be found for many names like German spellings, so with Aleksander / Alexander , Andreja / Andrea , Dytmar / Ditmar / Dietmar , Juta / Jutta , Rajnar / Reiner or Weronika / Veronika . Some names also have intermediate forms, such as Lucaš or Klawdija / Clawdija / Claudija / Klaudia / Claudia .

German names in Sorbian spelling such as Pawlina are relatively common, Sorbian names in German spelling such as Bronislaw , on the other hand, are rarely found.

For names that contain a short i (spoken like Sorbian y) or a voiced s (spoken like Sorbian z) in German, the Sorbian spelling can follow the German spelling or the German pronunciation. Therefore, there are often several forms in Sorbian spelling, as in Silka and Sylka or in Jósef and Józef .

declination

Originally female Upper Sorbian names ended in the basic form with -a and male names were either ending with -o or -a. These names are declined in Upper Sorbian like the corresponding nouns.

Měrana , Měrany, Měranje, Měranu, ...
Rodźisław , Rodźisława, Rodźisławej, Rodźisława, ...
Měrko , Měrka, Měrkej, Měrka, ...
Ota , Oty, Oće, Otu, ...

Newer name forms that no longer correspond to these paradigms can, in extreme cases, be left undeclined. Normally, however, they can be declined, and in some cases they can be adjusted slightly.

For female names like Andrea , the stem of which ends in a vowel, a -j- is inserted in the declination:

→ Andrea, Andreje, Andreji, ...

Feminine names like Katrin , Berbel or Beatrix , which are endless in their basic form, are declined like the corresponding nouns:

→ Katrin, Katriny, Katrinje, ...
→ Berbel, Berbele, Berbeli, ...
→ Beatrix, Beatrixy, Beatrixy, ...

For male names like Wyli , the stem of which ends in a vowel, a -j- is inserted in the declination:

→ Wyli, Wylija, Wylijej, ...
