The Patrick Air Force Base (in the future Patrick Space Force Base ) is an air base of the US Air Force between Satellite Beach and Cocoa Beach in Brevard County , Florida . At the same time, it is a census-designated place (CDP) with 1222 inhabitants (status: 2010).

The base is home to the 45th Space Wing , whose members carry out all unmanned rocket launches at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and is subordinate to the Air Force Space Command .

history

The base was opened by the US Navy on October 1, 1940 as Naval Air Station Banana River . At that time it was used as a take-off and landing pad for seaplanes .

After the end of World War II, the station was decommissioned and on September 1, 1948 handed over to the US Air Force, which renamed it the Joint Long Range Proving Ground . In August 1950 it was named Patrick Air Force Base in honor of Major General Mason Mathews Patrick.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 1222 inhabitants were distributed over 462 households. 77.2% of the population identified themselves as whites, 11.7% as African American , 0.9% as Indians and 1.9% as Asian Americans . 2.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 6.0% to several ethnic groups. 18.4% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 59.1% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 3.5% of all households. 85.6% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 3.00 people and the average family size was 3.28 people.

34.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 53.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 10.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 1.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 24 years. 55.9% of the population were male and 44.1% were female.

The median annual income was $ 44,375, with 5.2% of the population living below the poverty line.
