economy

Pertuis and its surroundings have always been largely characterized by agriculture, with the place itself also functioning as a craft, market and service center. With the presence of the Popes in the nearby city of Avignon , more and more arable land was converted into vineyards, so that in 1369 a 20-year stop to new vineyards had to be announced. With the development of its glass and textile industry , Pertuis already had around 3,500 inhabitants in 1765; in the 19th century the place rose to the canton capital. The construction of the suspension bridge and the train station gave the city a strong economic boost. Agriculture around Pertuis benefited from the irrigation of the Durance valley. The vineyards in the area are now part of the Côtes du Luberon ( AOC ) wine-growing region .

history

The city of Pertuis was founded in 981. It was located near the first ferry across the Durance and thus on an important passage between the lower and upper Provence . During the Middle Ages , Montmajour Abbey and the Counts of Provence and Forcalquier fought fierce battles for the city before it was occupied in the 14th century by various wandering bands of mercenaries from the Hundred Years' War . After the siege by royal troops, the city was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of France in 1427 . The old castle, built in the twelfth century, was destroyed in 1596. Only the donjon , converted into a belfry , remained. Major renovations led to the breakthrough of several streets and the destruction of the city wall.

politics

Politically, the municipality, like the entire region, tends towards the political right , but to a lesser extent. At the local level, mostly left-wing candidates , e.g. B. the Parti socialiste elected. Since 2008, however, Roger Pellenc from the UMP has been mayor.

Attractions

On the Place Mirabeau , near the belfry , stands the Saint-Nicolas church . It consists of two parallel long houses with side chapels . There are many interesting houses along the narrow streets that are currently being renovated . At 77 rue de la Durance , behind the town hall , there is a large house with an elegant 18th century facade. Cultural events take place regularly in the vaulted cellar La Voûte des Arts from the 16th century. From the Place de l'Ange , the Rue Vaillante leads to the Tour Saint-Jacques , a remnant of the medieval city wall, of which only a few traces remain.

To the west of the tower you pass an old craftsman's house from the 16th century via Rue Droite . At 6 rue Boileau there is a house with a Renaissance facade. From Rue Petite over Rue Francois-Morel towards Place Mirabeau you can see the Maison de la reine Jeanne , which was built around 1585, but is currently in rather poor condition.
