Paudorf is a market town with 2560 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Krems-Land district in Lower Austria in Austria .

Paudorf is best known for having the largest sequoia tree in all of Austria, a quarry and extensive viticulture .

geography

Geographical location

Krustetten as seen from the Benetiktinerstift Göttweig

Paudorf extends over an area of 30.09 square kilometers. The community is located in the Kremstal wine-growing region in the northernmost part of the Mostviertel . The highest point in the community is the Statzberg at 580  m above sea level. A.

Paudorf is located in the Mostviertel in Lower Austria on the eastern foothills of the Dunkelsteinerwald , the landscape of which is similar to the Waldviertel . Geologically, it is the area of the Crystalline of the Bohemian Massif south of the Danube . This old mountain core builds up the entire Waldviertel and shapes its surface form and landscape character. The elongated, east-west oriented municipality of Paudorf covers 30.09 square kilometers. The village of Paudorf is located in the middle of the north-south running main road Krems - St. Pölten .

The Fladnitz, which rises in Karlstetten, flows through the town from the south to the north towards the Danube. The main town at 257  m above sea level. A. , measured at the municipal office in the center of Paudorf, is also the lowest point in the municipality.

Geology and land use

The mountains of the Dunkelsteinerwald around the villages of Paudorf and Meidling and further to the west of the municipality consist of granulites with ultrabasite lenses switched on . The expansion of the Meidling quarry (opened in 1896) in areas west of Hörfarth has been a political issue in the municipality for several years, as dust, noise and freight traffic are the negative consequences of the economic use of the rock in the area. On the heights in the area of the main road and in the east of the municipality there are tertiary deposits, especially conglomerates and sands of old river systems. In the deeper areas around Paudorf and in the east of the municipality there are Quaternary loess deposits . An old clay pit at the foot of the Waxenberg in the north-west of Paudorf has been open for decades. Compared to the shallow soils of the granulite massifs, the soils that developed in the loess are significantly more powerful and also more fertile.

Around 60% of the community is forested. The forests are mainly in the mountainous western half of the municipality. In the gently hilly eastern half, the towns of Eggendorf, Höbenbach, Krustetten and Tiefenfucha are located within predominantly arable areas with smaller forests.

climate

Paudorf lies in the temperate climatic zone, in the transitional area of oceanic and continental characteristics. Over the year the average temperature is around 9.4 ° C, in January just below freezing point, in July around 20 ° C. The average annual precipitation is around 650 mm, with a maximum in late spring to summer. Westerly winds dominate during the year. The summers can be very warm and dry with continental influences. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and phases with dominating cyclonal rain ensure that the maximum precipitation is still in summer. The relative dryness is caused by high evaporation rates. Winters are cold and moderately humid.

Community structure

Paudorf consists of seven cadastral communities , which are also separate localities: (residents as of January 1, 2020)

  • Eggendorf (110) including pan wood

history

Prehistory and early history:

The first settlements in Paudorf could be found in the Neolithic around 4500 BC. Be proven. Finds from this period are the Venus von Höbenbach and the fertility idol , a sculpture that depicts a female figure with animal horns. The place Paudorf was first mentioned in 1083, at that time still as Punamisdorf . The cadastral communities Eggendorf, Höbenbach and Krustetten were already mentioned in 1072 as Echindorf , Horiginpach and Crucistin . Hörfarth is from the year 1290 as Herfuert and in 1302 Tiefenfucha can be traced as Fuchawe inferiori .

Modern times:

In 1462 a battle took place between Emperor Friedrich III. and the knight Fronauer in Paudorf (Frohnauer feud). The districts of Krustetten and Höbenbach in particular were badly damaged. In 1481 the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus conquered Meidling Castle. It was not until the 16th century that the Hungarian troops could be repulsed. The next battle occurred in 1529, when the Ottomans attacked Paudorf during the first siege of Vienna and devastated the area. In 1645, during the Thirty Years' War, imperial troops looted numerous villages, including Paudorf, after the battle of Jankau was lost. In 1683 the Ottomans came to Paudorf again during the Second Siege of Vienna and devastated the place and the surrounding area.

In 1736 there was a major fire in the municipality of Krustetten and further fires in Höbenbach in 1744 and 1768 as well as several arson attacks around 1820. In 1741 Paudorf was occupied by troops of the Elector of Bavaria. In 1850 the four communities Paudorf (with Hörfarth and Meidling), Höbenbach (with Eggendorf), Krustetten and Tiefenfucha were formed. 30 years later, the future abbot Adalbert Dungel planted the first sequoia trees on the Eichberg on a trial basis . In 1889 the Herzogenburg – Krems railway line , which runs through Paudorf, was built. The opening of the quarry in 1896 was a further step in the town's economic development. In 1971 the four communities were united under the name Paudorf. It was not until 1985 that the community was recognized as a market town and received a coat of arms.

Recent history:

At the end of the 1990s, the Catholic pastor Udo Fischer was removed from his office as pastor on the basis of statements critical of the church by Bishop Krenn . Nevertheless, he was confirmed by the abbot of Gottweig Abbey , to which the Paudorf parish belongs. It was not until 2005 that Bishop Klaus Küng , Krenn's successor, reinstated him as pastor of the diocese and rehabilitated him.

religion

Local chapel of Paudorf

There has always been a close connection between the parish of Paudorf and the Göttweig monastery , which is located on Berg Göttweig in the market town of Furth on the border with Paudorf. The parish of Paudorf was renamed in 1991 from "Pfarre Göttweig" to "Pfarre Paudorf-Göttweig".

The collegiate church, which was inaugurated on September 9, 1083, was the trigger for the establishment of Paudorf's own parish. In 1130 the parish church of St. Gotthard was built in Romanesque style right next to the monastery . At that time, this had the highest tower in the entire complex on Berg Göttweig before it was demolished. The parish church of St. Gotthard was rebuilt in the same place between 1403 and 1414, but in Gothic style. This was badly damaged by a large volume of the monastery in 1718 and later torn off due to the excessive damage it caused. Until September 12, 1993 the Göttweig Abbey was the main church of the market community. Then the modern parish church of St. Altmann in Hellerhof was inaugurated and has been the main church and seat of the Paudorf-Göttweig parish ever since.

The majority of the population of Paudorf is of the Roman Catholic denomination. In the 2001 census, the proportion of people with a Roman Catholic faith was 87.7% (2096 people). This was followed by 2.6% (61) with an Islamic and 1.4% (34) with a Protestant faith. 7.2% (173) of the residents were without religious beliefs.

The Hellerhof , on which the parish church St. Altmann and the baroque chapel of John the Baptist are located, is located southeast of the town center. In each cadastral parish of the municipality there is also a chapel, in which mass is regularly celebrated. With the exception of the castle chapel in Meidling from 1444, all chapels were built in the 19th or 20th century. The castle chapel was renovated in 2003.

Population development

Population development

The municipality is populated with an average population density of 81 inhabitants per square kilometer (for comparison: Lower Austria has 83, Austria 98 inhabitants per square kilometer). The history of the Hellerhof goes back to the Middle Ages, when the Archbishop of Salzburg, Dietmar I , bought the site in order to found the town of Dietmarsdorf . In the years 1650 to 1651 Abbot Gregor Heller had Dietmarsdorf converted into a recreation farm and renamed it Hellerhof . After a big fire, the chapel was built in 1678. In later years the Hellerhof was expanded.

In May 2002, Asamer Holding took over the business from Wanko , which had been running it since 1927. The first owner of the quarry was the Austrian State Railways . The farm building, which dates back to 1651 and is located on the Hellerhof, was converted and renovated in 2002. The barn of the Hellerhof was caught in a fire in 1812. From this a historical criminal case developed, which formed the basic idea of Wilhelm Kienzl's opera Der Evangelimann . The first performance took place in Berlin in 1895. The historical model of the Evangelimann was the abbot of Göttweig, born in Paudorf, Engelbert Schwerdfeger .
  • Abbot Johannes Dizent Museum : The museum opened in June 2010 in the Hellerhof comprises the chapel and four other rooms (old and new sacristy, memorial room and oratory) and is dedicated to Abbot Johannes Ev. Dedicated to V. Dizent (1642–1689).
