Podhorie (Hungarian Zsolnaerdőd - until 1907 Podhorje ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 951 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .
geography
The community is located at the transition from the Žilinská kotlina basin to the Súľovské skaly (literally the Súľov rock), a part of the Súľovské vrchy Mountains, to the west . The center of the village is at an altitude of 460 m nm and is 13 kilometers from Žilina .
Neighboring municipalities are Lietava in the north and east, Lietavská Svinná-Babkov in the south, Súľov-Hradná in the west and Paština Závada in the north-west.
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1393 as Pothora and was created in the second half of the 14th century in a forest clearing in the domain of Lietava Castle . In 1598 there were 12 houses in the village, in 1828 there were 42 houses and 329 inhabitants, who were mainly employed as farmers. The only known seal stamp dates from the 18th century and shows the circular script SIGIL [lum] P [ossessionis] PODHORGE and three stylized rocky cliffs with a tree on the middle cliff.
Until 1918, the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then belonged to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, 811 inhabitants lived in Podhorie, of whom 802 were Slovaks , three Magyars , two Ukrainians, and one Moravia and one Czech . Two residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .
750 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church, four residents to the Evangelical Church AB, two residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Old Catholic Church and one to the Jehovah's Witnesses; two residents professed a different denomination. 38 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 13 residents has not been determined.
