The 2014/15 season was the eighth season of the German ProB basketball division . The ProB is the second season of the hierarchically structured 2nd basketball league . The regular season began on September 27, 2014 and ended on March 7, 2015, which was followed by the play-offs for promotion and the play-down delegation rounds. The play-offs ended on May 2, 2015 with the second final game in which BAWE Oldenburger TB was able to defend its previous year's title against final opponent SC Rist Wedel .

mode

Twelve teams each in two groups, North and South, take part in this division's play. The regular season is played as a round- robin tournament in the mode everyone against everyone ( English "Round Robin" ) with a return game in the respective regional group. The eight best-placed teams at the end of this main round play the two finalists in the play-offs in the "best-of-three" mode , both of whom acquire the right to participate in the ProA for the following season and play the champions of this division. The teams in positions nine to twelve of each group at the end of the main round play another round-robin tournament with a round trip within the regional groups while maintaining the main round results, with the two teams in the two lowest places in the table relegating to the regional leagues. If more than twelve teams take part in a group, the teams ranked behind twelfth place in the main round are relegated directly.

conditions

The participating clubs must provide proof of their athletic qualifications, economic performance, suitability of technical playing facilities and organizational requirements, which is regulated by the license statute. In addition, the organization of the club, the promotion of young talent and the venue infrastructure are assessed using a point system. In particular, a venue with a capacity for at least 500 spectators is mandatory for participants in the ProB.

During the game there must always be three German players per team on the field, the German players are marked with a German flag on their jerseys. A maximum of 18 players per season and team can be used. At least nine of these must have German citizenship. Of the maximum of twelve players that can be used per game, at least six must be German. There are double licenses for players in the U24 age group, who can therefore be used at the same time in the BBL , as well as for U22 players from the regional leagues (and below). Players with a double license do not count among the 18 maximum usable players, but those with German citizenship do count towards the national quota.

Season Notes

  • Before the season, the official website of the 2nd basketball league, i.e. for ProA and ProB together, was revised.
  • The BG Karlsruhe and Otto Baskets Magdeburg were relegated to the ProB from the ProA 2013/14 .
  • The master of the ProB 2013/14 , the Baskets Akademie Weser-Ems Oldenburger TB , did not apply for a license for the ProA 2014/15 and thus forfeited his athletic promotion right, so that only last year's finalist Bike-Café Messingschlager Baunach was promoted to the ProA 2014/15. The successors for the BAWE Oldenburger TB were the Hamburg Towers via wildcard .
  • The Rostock Seawolves were promoted from the Regionalliga Nord, the Iserlohn Kangaroos from the west , the TG Take-Off Würzburg from the south-east and the TV Saarlouis Royals from the south-west .
  • The final license for relegated Otto Baskets Magdeburg and promoted TV Saarlouis Royals only took place at the second attempt, so that the division into leagues was not certain for a long time. At the end of the season, the Otto Baskets had to face a relicensing process. Furthermore, the UBC Hannover Tigers finally renounced their license and obtained an exchange of participation rights with the northern regional division SC Itzehoe Eagles , so that the number of participants in the northern group was finally fixed at 13.
  • The regional division of the groups north and south was adjusted so that the teams from the east of the republic, which correspond to the " accession area " of 1990, were concentrated in the group north. Teams from North Rhine-Westphalia were divided between group north and group south, so that in addition to the Dragons Rhöndorf this season the Schwelmer Baskets and promoted Iserlohn Kangaroos also play in the group south. The Dresden Titans and the university giants Leipzig moved to the north group.
  • The player Filmore Beck knocked his opponent Paul Brotherson to the ground with a punch on the eighth day of the match between the Long Giraffes and BG Karlsruhe. Brotherson suffered several facial fractures, including the jaw, cheekbones and nose, and lost some teeth. After emergency medical and surgical treatment, he was only able to participate in championship games again after more than six weeks. The disqualified Beck was fired from his club TV Langen, and he was banned from playing in national leagues until mid-2018 with a previously unprecedented sentence with a suspension of almost four years. In arbitration proceedings, the ban was finally limited to the end of the season.
  • The player Marvin Boadu was suspended for a doping offense in early January 2015 until the end of the season. His club Hertener Löwen terminated his contract prematurely.
  • The license for the season was subsequently withdrawn from the Otto Baskets Magdeburg after the end of the season, as proof of the prerequisites for economic performance was not provided. Regardless of the sporting performance, the Otto Baskets, along with the north-last BSW Sixers, were thus prematurely relegated. With regard to the play-downs, this meant that the penultimate of a regional group with the better win rate achieved relegation.
  • On the last day of the play-downs, a game that had become meaningless between the BIS Baskets Speyer , who had already been relegated, and newcomer TV Saarlouis Royals, who were already relegated, was extended three times. At the end of the game, in which the two teams delayed their personal end of the season, hosts Speyer won 139-132 over relegated Saarlouis. For the Saarlouis Royals, a few months later after the licenses and starting places were granted, it was still enough to stay up late.
