Counties
Izmir has been a large city (Büyükşehir belediyesi) since 1984. After an administrative reform in 2014, all districts are directly subordinate to the Lord Mayor of Izmir. The former mayors of the municipalities ( Belediye ) were downgraded to the rank of Muhtar . Therefore, the 30 counties are also urban districts:
geography
The province of Izmir is part of the Aegean region of Turkey. The largest rivers are the Gediz , the Little Menderes and the Bakırçay . The Gediz flows into the sea at Foça. It used to flow west of Karşıyaka into the Gulf of Izmir . But the alluvial material carried by the river threatened to silt up access to the city's port. Therefore, at the end of the 19th century, the Gediz was diverted so that it can flow directly into the Aegean Sea.
