The Ramkhamhaeng University ( Thai : มหาวิทยาลัย รามคำแหง , English: Ramkhamhaeng University, short: RU) is one of two "open" universities in Thailand . This means that on the one hand there is no restricted access and on the other hand it offers distance learning . It was named in honor of King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai , who is credited with developing the Thai alphabet . With more than 600,000 students (as of 2004) it is the largest university in the country.

history

Prior to the founding of Ramkhamhaeng University in 1971, academic education in Thailand was in a serious crisis as the number of high school leavers willing to study far exceeded the number of places at the existing universities. This prompted parliament to pass a law establishing Ramkhamhaeng University as the first university in the country with no access restrictions.
