Reuben H. Walworth

Reuben Hyde Walworth (born October 26, 1788 in Bozrah , Connecticut , †  November 27, 1867 in Saratoga Springs , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1821 and 1823 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1796, Reuben Walworth and his parents came to Hoosick, New York State, where he attended public schools. After that he taught as a teacher for some time. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1809, he began to work in this profession from 1810 in Plattsburgh . In 1811 he became a district judge there. During the British-American War of 1812 he was a Colonel in the Judge Advocate on General Benjamin Mooers' staff .

Politically, Walworth was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1820 he was voted for the first seat of the twelfth. Electoral district of New York to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Ezra C. Gross on March 4, 1821 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1822, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1823 .

Between 1823 and 1828, Walworth was a judge in the Fourth Judicial District of New York. In 1828 he moved to Saratoga Springs. From 1828 to 1848 he held the office of Chancellor of the State of New York , which was the highest legal office at the state level until it was abolished in 1848. President John Tyler nominated him as a Supreme Court Justice in 1844 . However, the appointment was refused by the US Senate . In 1848, Walworth ran unsuccessfully for governor of New York . For many years he was chairman of the American Temperance Union and vice-president of the American Bible Society and died on November 27, 1867 in Saratoga Springs.
