Big Sharks - Small Fish (original title: Shark Tale; in German: Haifisch-Geschichte ) is a computer animation film from 2004 by the directors Vicky Jenson , Rob Letterman and Bibo Bergeron .

action

Oscar is just a small cleaner wrasse in the underwater world of the native Southside Reef . He works in the whale laundry of the pufferfish Sykes and dreams of fame, respect and money, but he sees no chance of achieving all of that. As unhappy as he is with his life, he does not notice that the angelfish Angie is secretly in love with him.

To make matters worse, Oscar has borrowed heavily from Sykes and since he cannot repay the money, Sykes decides to give Oscar 24 hours to pay. But when Angie gives him money for it, he puts it on the racing horse, Lucky Day. But when he falls in the race and can no longer win, Sykes gets angry and decides to have Oscar eliminated by Ernie and Bernie, two "Rasta jellyfish".

Coincidentally, at the point where Oscar is to be eliminated, Frankie, the eldest son and the pride of Don Lino, the reef's shark mafia boss, is killed by an anchor. Oscar cleverly uses the situation and presents himself as a shark killer and riff saver.

While Oscar enjoys the comforts of his star existence, including the acquaintance of the attractive lionfish lady Lola, the shark mafia prepares a counterattack.

Lenny, the youngest son of Don Linos, is a vegetarian and absolutely meek, which worries his father because his eldest son is now dead and can no longer take over the family business. Lenny should therefore kill the "shark killer" and so on the one hand restore the family's reputation and on the other hand prove that he is a real shark.

But Oscar and Lenny, who met in Frankie's tragic death, also make plans. Since Lenny wants to get out of his family's mafia business, he fakes a death throes with Oskar, in which he falls into the depths. Oscar has now proven to the reef inhabitants that he can really kill a shark and Lenny can now, disguised as a dolphin , take a job in the whale laundry.

Of course, the shark mafia, led by Don Lino, cannot let this shame sit on them and plans to lure Oscar and his friends into a trap, which they succeed. After an initial bluff is exposed, they only narrowly escape death by being eaten, but are followed by Don Lino into the reef and into the whale washing facility. There, Oscar succeeds in locking Don Lino and Lenny face-to-face with the skillful use of car wash technology. Oscar takes the opportunity to reconcile father and son and to persuade the Mafia to come to an agreement to spare the reef in the future. He himself reveals his hoax to the assembled press and confesses his love to Angie in front of the cameras.

Last but not least, Oscar becomes the co-owner and manager of the whale laundry.

Reviews

“Fast-paced, sympathetic and elaborate, but overall quite harmless cartoon comedy about various sea creatures. She mainly relies on quoting genre films and imitating human life in the big cities and black youth culture, without eliciting a convincing humorous approach from this endeavor. "

"As with" Nemo ", a vegetarian shark struggles with its fate; however, "Shark Tale" (original title) pushes the humanization of the critters decisively further without reaching the charm of the predecessor. "

“It's not lame from start to finish. The film has its two or three moments: for example when you think you can recognize Robert De Niro's features in Don Lino's shark face, because this shark has a blemish under the right eye and - in the original - speaks in Robert De Niro's voice (in German Christian Brückner, the voice actor De Niros, takes on the task). In addition, the film keeps it like its main character Oscar: Just as the latter dreams of big money with minimal investment, the latter wants to achieve its box office results with a minimum of imagination. In the surplus of the underwater world, this is too little use. "

- Cristina Nord - The daily newspaper

"In my deepest innermost, I'm superficial," Lola once said, and so it is with this film, which is only fun if it sets aside the educational ambitions to engage in its mobster parody of the world of sharks and slimy To graze squids. "
