The Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi 1980/81 was the 18th season of the second highest Turkish league in professional men's football. It was started on August 24, 1980 with the 1st game day and ended on May 25, 1981 with the 34th and final game day.

In the 1980/81 season, the third highest division, the 3rd Lig , was abolished in Turkish professional football and the teams in the 3rd Lig were transferred to the one higher division, the 2nd Lig . Due to the increased number of teams, the league was not played in two groups in contrast to the previous season, but was expanded into a three-track league with twice 18 teams (groups A and B) and once 16 teams (group C). A total of 52 teams in three groups played for promotion to the Süper Lig . The top of the table in all three groups go straight to the higher Süper Lig. The season was played without relegation.

Beginning of the season were the remaining from the previous season 29 teams, the three relegated from the Süper Lig Göztepe Izmir , Kayserispor , Diyarbakırspor and the eighteen teams from the disbanded then third-rate third Lig Karşıyaka SK , Yeşilova SK , Kütahyaspor , Konyaspor , Izmirspor , Ödemişspor , Manisaspor , Beykozspor , Karagümrük SK , Alibeyköyspor , Gençlerbirliği Ankara , Kırklarelispor , Tokatspor , Hatayspor , Tarsus İdman Yurdu , Çorumspor , Erzincanspor , Malatyaspor have been added. In addition, İskenderunspor and Mardinspor from the regional amateur league were approved.

Göztepe Izmir reached the championship of group A and the direct promotion to the Süper Lig . In Group B , Sakaryaspor secured the championship and thus the first ascent in the club's history to the Süper Lig. Diyarbakırspor reached the championship of Group C several weeks before the official end of the season and thus rose again to the Süper Lig after a year. In addition to these three promoted promoters, MKE Ankaragücü , which ended the season as the Turkish Cup winner , also rose from Group B to the Süper Lig. The background to this out-of-regulation promoter was the special request of the incumbent Prime Minister of Turkey Kenan Evren , who wanted a team from the capital Ankara in the Süper Lig. Evren only came to power on September 12, 1980 through the military coup in Turkey in 1980 . With the provisional reason that the cup winners would have to move up to the Süper Lig, if not first class, by winning the cup, Ankaragücü was appointed as an additional promoter.
