history
There were first settlements in the Steyregg area, as evidenced by archaeological excavations, as early as the Neolithic . Slavic grave finds indicate settlement during the first centuries AD.
Tafersheim
In the early Middle Ages , several localities developed at geographically favorable locations along the Danube, which gained great importance as transshipment points in the salt trade from the south to the north via the Linzer Steig . Taberesheim is mentioned for the first time in 885 , later written as Tafersheim , Tabersheim , Tauirsheim , Taversheim and Taffersheim . The area of Tafersheim originally comprised settlements north of the Danube as well as in the south on the right bank of the Danube ( St. Peter , Zizlau and Seyrlurfahr in the area of voestalpine and Chemie Linz ). A church in Tafersheim is dated to the year 1111, the predecessor of today's parish church in Steyregg.
The name Tafersheim became increasingly limited in the 17th century until it finally became the house name of the Steyregger Hospital in the 19th century. After this was demolished in 1936 for traffic reasons, the name Tafersheim disappeared completely.
Steyregg
The construction of a castle in Steyregg should have started around 1150. Around 1150 the current place name is mentioned for the first time in connection with the castrum Steyrheke . The castle was constantly expanded and changed hands often.
In the 13th century the place Steyregg was raised to market and in 1482 received city rights . In the centuries that followed, the city remained in the shadow of the provincial capital Linz , which stretches along the southern bank of the Danube. Steyregg remained a small town that was largely shaped by the rural villages.
At the end of the 19th century, the construction of the Summerauerbahn and the construction of a bridge over the Danube contributed to a modest upswing. During the Second World War, the population of Steyregg suffered from the immediate vicinity of the Hermann Göring works in Linz, which were the target of numerous Allied bombings . In the last few decades, the city gained fame mainly for the environmental movement and its fight against emissions from heavy industry.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the former Count Salm-Reifferscheidt renovated the landmark of Steyregg Castle after it had been empty for 200 years.
In 2007 Steyregg hosted the World Water Ski Championships .
Population development
The population increase in recent decades was due to a strongly positive birth balance , the migration balance was mostly negative or only slightly positive.
politics
The community is located in the judicial district of Urfahr .
