Saint-Nicolas village church
The Romanesque village church of Saint-Nicolas is famous for its frescoes from the mid-12th century. It was probably built around 1120 by monks from the abbey. The undemanding building made of white ashlar was originally a three-aisled basilica; today the aisles are missing.
Frescoes in the choir
The damaged frescos in the choir were uncovered in 1945. In the apse calotte the "Majestas Domini" is depicted with the evangelist symbols and angels. The barrel vault of the choir bay shows in two picture zones events from the childhood of Christ, from the Annunciation to the flight to Egypt .
Frescoes in the crypt
The real surprise of the church is the crypt . Eight squat columns support a vault completely painted with small figures. They have probably never been painted over and alternate between biblical scenes, depictions of saints, allegorical and cosmological themes without any recognizable meaningful sequence .
