Viticulture in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil
The municipality gives its name to the wine-growing region of the same name with the status of an AOC (since July 31, 1937). In the western part of the Touraine region , part of the Loire wine-growing region, almost exclusively red wine of the Cabernet Franc grape variety is grown on a vineyard area of 943 hectares, which is spread across the various municipalities of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil . The use of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety is also permitted up to a maximum of 10% . The maximum permitted yield is 55 hl / ha; an amount that can be corrected up to 67 hl / ha depending on the year.
The wines have somewhat stronger tannins than the wines of Chinon , which grow about ten kilometers away on the other side of the Loire. However, they are a little lighter than the Bourgueil wines that grow in the neighboring area .
If the wines grow on slopes with tuff , the wines can be very long-lived in very good years (1976, 1989, 1990). Vines that grow on a sand and gravel soil make fruity, medium-heavy wines.
In 2002, 59,200 hl of red wine and a few hundred hectoliters of rosé wine were produced. White wines are not subject to the AOC regulations.
