A total of 53 mountain classifications had to be tackled at the Tour de France 2017 .
Of the 53 mountain ratings, 16 were in category 4, 14 in the third category, 3 in category 2, 11 in the first category and 7 climbs were assigned to the hors category. The division into categories was interesting for the evaluation of the dotted jersey . There was one point for the winner of a mountain classification in the fourth category, and two and five points respectively for mountain winners in categories 3 and 2. The first received ten points on a mountain in the first category, while hors-catégorie climbs earned the winner 25 points in the mountain classification.
On average, the 53 categorized climbs of the 104th Tour de France were 5.81 kilometers long. The longest climb was the one to the Col de la Croix de Fer (24.0 kilometers), while the only 1.1 kilometer long classification on the Côte de Villers-la-Montagne was the shortest of its kind. The steepest average ascent was the 8.7 kilometer drive to Mont du Chat , the flattest was the ascent to Côte de Capvern .
On the Col du Galibier was Souvenir Henri Desgrange awarded.
