The Type 87 ( Jpn., 87式偵察警戒車 , 87-shiki teisatsu keikaisha , dt. "Type-87 Spähwagen") is a six-wheeled (6 × 6) all-wheel drive Spähpanzer from Japanese production.

history

The Type 87 Spähpanzer was developed by the Japanese company Komatsu for the Japanese ground self-defense forces in the late 1970s . This reconnaissance vehicle partly uses the same assemblies as the six-wheeled command and radio armored vehicle Type 82 , which was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries . The armored car has been used by the Japanese self-defense forces since 1987. Only 52 vehicles were delivered to the defense forces by Mitsubishi until 2002 at a total cost of 1.5 trillion yen each. The Japanese armed forces were considering buying the German Gepard anti-aircraft tank as a replacement .
