The Albstadt-Sigmaringen University is a university of applied sciences (HAW) in Baden-Württemberg with locations in Albstadt ⊙ and Sigmaringen ⊙ .
The university focuses on four areas:
- Faculty of Engineering in Albstadt
- Faculty of Business Science and Management in Sigmaringen
- Faculty of Life Sciences in Sigmaringen
- Faculty of Computer Science in Albstadt
The university is a member of the university region of Tübingen-Hohenheim, founded in 2005, with the University of Hohenheim and the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen as well as the universities of Nürtingen-Geislingen , Reutlingen and Rottenburg . The aim of this association is to cooperate more closely on projects in infrastructure, administration, research and teaching.
She has also been a member of the International Lake Constance University Association for several years .
The university currently offers a total of 20 undergraduate courses with bachelor's and master's degrees at both locations , plus four online-based extra-occupational courses. A total of around 3,300 students are currently studying in Albstadt or Sigmaringen.
In addition to the option of a conventional degree, the university also offers a so-called combined degree in the fields of mechanical engineering, material and process engineering, industrial engineering, technical informatics, IT security and business administration. In cooperation with companies from the region, students can complete an apprenticeship with an IHK degree and a university degree in just four and a half years. The practical training takes place in the training phases and parallel to the course during the lecture-free period as well as in the context of the practical semester and bachelor thesis.
In addition, all courses can be studied part-time.
history
In 1971 the State Engineering School was converted into the Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences . The then diploma course was "Clothing Technology". This was followed by the diploma course "Nutrition and Hygiene Technology". In 1985/86, the then “Household and Nutritional Technology” department set itself the task of expanding the range of courses at the University of Applied Sciences in Sigmaringen in order to meet the needs of the economy and to strengthen the location.
The application from the University of Applied Sciences for the establishment of the "Pharmaceutical Technology" course was supported by companies in the pharmaceutical industry. In the winter semester of 1987/88 it was offered for the first time in Germany at the Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences. In 1988/89 Albstadt became the second location and the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences was established . The clothing technology was moved to there. Further courses were added in the following years. In Sigmaringen, a new department was set up with business administration. In the course of the switch from diploma to bachelor's and master's degree, which began in 2004, the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences became today's Albstadt-Sigmaringen University .
Both locations developed a differentiated range of courses: In Albstadt, the diploma course "Technical Computer Science" was added in 1989, followed shortly afterwards by "Mechanical Engineering". In 1995 the diploma course "Industrial Engineering" was added. In 1999 the two diploma courses “Business Informatics” and “Communication and Software Technology” emerged from “Technical Computer Science”. From the beginning of 2005, all courses were switched from diploma to bachelor's degree. A year later, a new master’s program was launched with “Management and Information Systems”, followed by a “Systems Engineering” master’s course. In the 2014/2015 winter semester, the “Material and Process Engineering” bachelor's degree program, which is a mixture of process engineering and materials science, started at the Albstadt site. Since the 2016/2017 winter semester, the university has also been offering an interdisciplinary range of electives and specializations for master’s students on the subject of “Industry 4.0” as part of the newly founded “Competence Center Master Industry 4.0”. The master’s courses in mechanical engineering, systems engineering, textile and clothing management and industrial engineering are involved.
In Sigmaringen, the diploma course "Business Administration" was added in 1998, the master course "Biomedical Engineering" in the summer semester 2000 and the diploma course "Facility Management" in the winter semester 2000/2001. At the same time as the changeover in Albstadt, the previous courses at the Sigmaringen location were also converted to Bachelor's degrees. Since then, the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences has been offering the bachelor's degree courses in “Business Administration”, “Food, Nutrition and Hygiene”, “Pharmaceutical Technology” and “Facility Management” at the Sigmaringen site. New here since 2008 have been master's courses in "Business Administration and Management", "Facility Design and Management" (meanwhile expanded and renamed "Facility and Process Design") and "Biomedical Sciences". In the winter semester 16/17, the bachelor's degree in “Energy Economics and Management” started.
In the 2012/13 winter semester, the university reached the 3000 mark for the first time. At the start of the 2016/17 winter semester, a total of 3,668 students were studying at the university. At this time, 1,956 students were enrolled in Albstadt, 1,525 in Sigmaringen, and 187 were studying a part-time distance learning course.
building
Both locations are almost the same in terms of the number of students, but show different structural images.
In Albstadt , the courses are spread across four buildings that are close together, including a converted former textile factory, all of which are located directly on the edge of the old town of Ebingen . The Sigmaringen university location, on the other hand, has a clear campus structure, located on a hill outside the city.
The district of Sigmaringen , the developer of the new university building in Sigmaringen, received the "Award for Exemplary Building" from the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects in 1995 . With the second extension, a clearly structured, light and functional building in north-south direction with a length of 100 meters was created. In addition to the ground floor and upper floor, there is a slope floor over half of the total length. The main entrance leads through the current main building, the so-called first extension from 1995. It connects to the new building on the ground floor and first floor. The northern exit leads to the campus, the southern entrance to the car park, which has been expanded by 66 spaces.
The overall planning for the University of Applied Sciences in the early 1990s already provided for a second extension. From April 2007 to March 2009 an extension with 1,980 square meters of floor space was built. The construction costs were capped at 7.5 million euros when the approval was granted in 2002. The university had another million euros available for the interior. The client was the state of Baden-Württemberg. The architectural office Glück und Partner from Stuttgart carried out the planning and implementation. On April 8, 2009, the new building was ceremoniously handed over to the Life Science Faculty by Prime Minister Günther Oettinger .
architectural art
As part of Kunst am Bau there are several art objects in and on the new university building in Sigmaringen, including two pictures by the artist Johannes Rave ("Untitled", 1993), two pictures by the artist Barbara Ehrmann ("Thought Machine I" and "Thought Machine II") , 1993), the collage “Study for a Concept” (1994), five etchings by Wolfram Ullrich (“Islands”, 1992) and two sculptures by Romain Fink (“Two Grids (Red + Green)”, 1994).

Applied research
The Institute for Applied Research (IAF) is the central coordination point for university research at Albstadt-Sigmaringen University. It promotes team-oriented collaboration and research activities in the three main research areas of the university:
- DITI - digitization, IT security, Industry 4.0
- GEB - health, nutrition, biomedicine
- NESP - Sustainable Development - Smart Materials and Products
The aim of the IAF is to convey the existing research-related competencies both internally and externally. It promotes intensive cooperation with the regional economy - innovative ideas can thus be converted directly into future-proof products. Seven specialist institutes bundle the expertise of university researchers in thematic priorities - these are organized under the IAF umbrella. Research projects and collaborations with companies are organized in the institutes:
- FIW - Specialized Institute for Engineering and Economics
