The Wandsbek-Gartenstadt underground station is a stop on the Hamburg underground lines U1 and U3 in the Wandsbek district , named after the garden city of Wandsbek . The abbreviation of the station at the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "WK". The U1 has around 26,900 passengers getting on and off every day, while the U3 has around 22,400 passengers getting on and off. Passengers transferring between the two lines are counted twice in these numbers.

location

The underground station is west of Lesserstraße, the reception building is on the northern side of Ostpreußenplatz, to which the exit leads. The two directional platforms are on a railway embankment and have fixed stairs, the northern platform leading into the city also has an escalator leading upwards . In 2014, an exit was opened on the northern side of the access building from the reception building to the stairs, which shortens the way to the Bundeswehr hospital. This exit served primarily as a replacement for the exit to Ostpreußenplatz, which was temporarily blocked during the installation of the elevators below, and was closed again after the construction work was completed and built with an operating room accessible from the inside.

Since 2014, both platforms have been barrier-free, each with an elevator and a tactile guidance system for the blind .

history

Eugen Göbel's reception building west of Lesserstraße (2006)

The Walddörferbahn from Barmbek towards Volksdorf was almost completed before the First World War . Due to the shortage of materials and personnel due to the war, the station was only handed over to an initially provisional steam operation on September 12, 1918. At that time this station was called " Hinschenfelde ". In 1920 it was renamed "Wandsbek Gartenstadt". The electrical equipment with power rail and elevated train - rail car began on September 6, 1920th

The Wandsbeker line from Jungfernstieg via the main station to Wandsbek Markt was built as the first new underground line after the Second World War . On August 4, 1963, the further extension to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt was completed. This station became a branching station and was given a second platform on the northern side for operations in the direction of the city center and a double-track parking facility east of the bridges over Lesserstraße. Both platform lengths were designed for 9-car trains.

Today from Wandsbek-Gartenstadt the lines U1 (via Wandsbek Markt and downtown Hamburg to Norderstedt Mitte, in the other direction via Volksdorf to Großhansdorf or Ohlstedt ) and U3 (ring line Wandsbek-Gartenstadt - Barmbek - Innenstadt - Barmbek), the starts here. The U2 line , which ran here instead of the U3 line until summer 2009, was shortened by two stations from Farmsen to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt at the beginning of the 1970s for operational reasons, only the entry and exit trips to the Farmsen depot were initially published.
