The 1984/85 season of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga was the twelfth season of the second highest German ice hockey division. Despite many established clubs, the relatively young SV Bayreuth team made it to the Bundesliga . The Bundesliga relegated EHC Essen-West took the starting place in the second division . In the group south , EV Pfronten and TuS Geretsried had to relegate to the upper league, while in the north all clubs were able to keep the class due to the increase in the relay.

The playing time was also the first professional playing time of later top German players. For example, Klaus Merk stood between the posts at Augsburg EV , while Andreas Brockmann went hunting for goals for EC Bad Tölz .

As in the previous season , the league was played on two tracks again. The north group started with eight teams, ten clubs took part in the south group . First, a preliminary round was played in the form of a double or triple round, so that the clubs in the south played two and the clubs in the north three home and three away games against the other teams in their group. The best four teams from both groups then took part in the relegation round to the Bundesliga , while the remaining teams had to play for their starting place in the league in the relegation rounds in the north and south.
