Berlin International Film Festival 1976
The Berlin International Film Festival 1976 Film Year took place from June 25th to July 6th, 1976.
This was the last festival under the direction of the founding director Alfred Bauer , whose contract expired on November 30, 1976. Bauer then retired.
On the 200th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence , the history of the United States was the focus of the festival. George Stevens Jr. showed his documentary America at the Movies, Robert Altman Buffalo Bill and the Indians . The competition also included the Watergate film Die Unbrechlichen (out of competition) by Alan J. Pakula, and the program of the International Forum of New Films featured the documentary The Unquiet Death of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg . Another critical contribution to American history was the revival of Charlie Chaplin's film A King in New York .
The biggest scandal took place during the forum. The Japanese film In the Realm of the Senses by Nagisa Ōshima was confiscated by the public prosecutor during the Berlinale premiere and banned after a court hearing. The ban was not lifted until 1978 and the film was released in German cinemas.
