The Assassin's Creed series ( AC for short ; German about “ Credo des Assassinen ”) is a computer game series from the French publisher Ubisoft from the action adventure genre . It has existed since 2007 with the publication of the game of the same name and comprises eleven main games and numerous offshoots. Assassin's Creed Odyssey was last released in October 2018 . Most parts of the series were developed by the Canadian studio Ubisoft Montreal .

Gameplay

The game series starts with the bartender Desmond Miles , who is kidnapped by Abstergo Industries , a modern Templar organization, in the 2012 framework story of Assassin's Creed . He is subjected to a process in which he has to go through the genetic memories of his ancestors using a computer. His ancestors are various assassins whose adventures the player experiences in different parts. Mostly he has to prevent and fight against conspiracies of the Templar Order . While in the first games of the series it becomes clear that the character in the present sequences of the plot is Desmond Miles, this is no longer clear from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , since the presentation of the present story is from this part in first person perspective or in cut scenes takes place and gives no information on the true identity of the player character. From the tenth part of the series, "Assassins Creed: Origins", the player again controlled a "real" character in the present, the former Abstergo employee Leila Hassan, who after the events from the movie is looking for artifacts of the previous civilization on her own.

All parts of the series are open world games . Most of the action in each of the games takes place in a specific region and era in the past , with reference to real historical events. In the course of the missions, the player meets numerous well-known personalities of the respective time such as Richard the Lionheart , Saladin (in Assassin's Creed ), Leonardo da Vinci , Lorenzo il Magnifico , Alexander VI. (in Assassin's Creed II ), George Washington , Benjamin Franklin , Thomas Jefferson (in Assassin's Creed III ), Blackbeard (in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag ), Maximilien de Robespierre , Napoleon Bonaparte (in Assassin's Creed Unity ), Alexander Graham Bell , Karl Marx , Charles Darwin , Charles Dickens , Queen Victoria (in Assassin's Creed Syndicate ), Cleopatra VII , Gaius Iulius Caesar , Ptolemaios XIII. (in Assassin's Creed Origins ) and many more. Other events of the time are also integrated, for example the player unintentionally triggers the earthquake in Haiti (1751) and the earthquake in Lisbon in 1755 . The storyline that runs through the series is the centuries-old conflict between assassins and templars, with the player mostly impersonating an assassin. The protagonist is depicted in the past sequences from a third-person perspective . The gameplay of the series is extremely versatile and is characterized by the great freedom of movement in the fictional world, in which the player can take on secondary tasks in addition to main tasks to fulfill certain missions.

Main series

Assassin's Creed (2007)

Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed was released in November 2007 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles and in April 2008 for Windows PCs.

The action of the game is set in 2012. The bartender Desmond Miles is kidnapped by Abstergo Industries and subjected to a process in which he is supposed to relive the genetic memories of an ancestor using the so-called animus , a kind of computer. With this, Professor Warren Vidic, head of the project, hopes to find one of the fragments of Eden that Abstergo could use to influence the thoughts of every living being. Desmond is transported back to the memories of his ancestor, the assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, in 1191. During the Third Crusade , he was active in the Holy Land , where he had to prevent a conspiracy by the Knights Templar. Altaïr manages to get hold of the Eden Shard, whereupon Desmond returns to the present and leaves the Animus.

Assassin's Creed II (2009)

Assassin's Creed II

Assassin's Creed II was released in November 2009 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles and in March 2010 for Windows PCs.

The plot of the game is directly linked to that of its predecessor. After his return to the present, Desmond Miles flees the building of Abstergo Industries to an assassin's hiding place, where he has to live through the life stages of the assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who lived in Florence in the late 15th century at the time of the Renaissance, using the further developed Animus 2.0 lives. Shortly after the plot begins, Ezio's father and brothers are captured and hanged. Ezio then flees to his uncle Mario in Tuscany , where he is trained as an assassin. In the further course Ezio has to carry out numerous assassinations and sets out to search for the culprit for the death of his father, which leads him to the Vatican City . There Pope Alexander VI confesses to him . that the reason for his father's death is the Eden apple, with which a secret chamber can be opened that is said to contain incredible power. Ezio manages to take the apple and enter the chamber, where he is warned of a future catastrophe by the Roman goddess Minerva . Thereupon Desmond gets out of the Animus, since the Assassin's hiding place was discovered by the Templars. On the run, Desmond runs into Warren Vidic and the Abstergo security guards in the warehouse of the building , whom he can defeat in a fight. Vidic can escape, however. Desmond and the assassins flee to a new hiding place.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (2010)

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was released in November 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles and in March 2011 for Windows PCs.

The plot of the game is directly linked to that of its predecessor. After his escape from the assassin's hiding place, Desmond and his colleagues travel to the villa of Ezio's uncle Mario in Tuscany. There Desmond goes back to Ezio's memories to learn more about the whereabouts of the Eden Shard. The memories start in the Tuscan villa, which is attacked by the papal army of Cesare Borgia . In the battle Ezio is badly wounded and his uncle is killed, and Borgia comes into possession of the Eden Shard. Ezio goes in search of the splinter that leads him to Rome , which is ruled by the Borgia . There he allies himself with underground movements led by assassins to reduce the influence of the Borgia. After the elimination of numerous followers of Cesare Borgia, Ezio can finally find the Eden Shard in the Vatican . The plot continues a few years later when Ezio manages to push Cesare Borgia off the city walls at the Battle of Viana . Ezio then returns to Rome and hides the Eden splinter under the Coliseum . After reliving this memory, Desmond travels to Rome, where he finds the Eden splinter in the Colosseum.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations (2011)

Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Assassin's Creed: Revelations was released in November 2011 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles and for Windows PCs.

The plot of the game is directly linked to that of its predecessor. After the events in the chamber under the Coliseum, Desmond's brain is overloaded and he is put into a coma. There is a risk that his real and genetic memories will mix, which would have irreparable psychological consequences. Therefore he is brought back into the animus and has to experience all the memories of Ezio and partly Altaïr in order to find a so-called synch node. At this point, the animus can separate Desmond's mind and memories from Ezio and Altaïr and thus wake him out of the coma. The memory begins with the now 52-year-old Ezio, who in the former assassin fortress Masyaf learns from a Templar captain about five keys with which one can open the door to the underground library of the fortress. He takes a key he found in the Topkapı Palace in Constantinople from the dying Templar and goes to Constantinople to look for the other four keys. In the course of memory, Ezio manages to find the keys, but they are taken from him by Ahmed, the Ottoman Crown Prince and leader of the Templars. Ezio follows Ahmed back to Masyaf, where he can defeat him and Ahmed is killed by Selim, his brother and true heir to the throne. Then Ezio succeeds in opening the door to the secret library, which contains Altaïr's skeleton and the apple of Eden. The memory ends with Ezio putting down his weapons in front of the apple and speaking to Desmond, whereupon Desmond wakes up from the coma.

Assassin's Creed III (2012)

Assassin's Creed III

Assassin's Creed III was released in October 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles and in November 2012 for Windows PCs. Assassin's Creed III was released for Windows PCs, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in March 2019 and as a remastered version for Nintendo Switch in May 2019.

In the present, the earth is on the verge of extinction from a massive solar flare . Only Desmond can prevent this. He must look for a way to save the world in the great temple of the First Civilization. When he enters the temple with his father, Shaun and Rebecca, Juno speaks to him. She explains to him that he needs a key to open the gate behind which the solution is. Thereupon Desmond collapses and wakes up again in the animus because the temple wants to show him something. He slips into the shoes of Haytham Kenway, a Templar who emigrated from his home country England to America to find a treasury. There he met the Indian woman Kanehtí: io, who showed him the temple in return for freeing her. However, this is locked; the Eden apple is required to open it. On their way together, the two fall in love and Kaniehí: io has a son from Haytham, whom she calls Ratonhnhaké: ton and raises alone. From now on, Desmond is in the skin of Ratonhnhaké: ton. Around the age of ten, Charles Lee, who holds the key to the temple, burns Ratonhnhaké: tons village. His mother dies in the flames, which is why he wants to be trained as an assassin as an adult, in order to eventually kill Charles Lee. His trainer and mentor will be Achilles Davenport, who previously trained assassins and is now retired. First of all, this Ratonhnhaké: ton gives the name "Connor", because survival for Indians at this time was difficult. For Achilles to train him, Connor has to rebuild the settlement around the house on the hill where he lives. This also includes the ship that is anchored in the bay and which Connor is allowed to command himself. Connor begins to free the cities of Boston and New York in order to get closer and closer to his goal, Charles Lee. However, Haytham Kenway is a close confidante of Lee, which is why Connor would have to kill his father to get at him. Instead, the two become friends and take down a common enemy of the two. They part ways shortly after Connor finds out that Haytham has kept him from hiding that his village is under attack. Connor later kills Haytham when he attacks a fort that Lee was supposed to be in. Ultimately, Connor can kill him in a tavern after a fight on a burning ship. Connor takes the key to the temple from him and buries it in the grave of the son of Achilles who died early.

In between the memories, Desmond himself travels three times to different places on earth in order to find more fragments of Eden that also contribute to the opening of the gate. At the end of the plot, Juno speaks to him and reveals that he would have to sacrifice himself to save the world. During this conversation Minerva appears and accuses Juno of only wanting power and thus being freed from the temple, while Minerva herself is only trying to help the people. Desmond eventually decides to sacrifice his life to save everyone else.
