The Ataturk Olympic Stadium ( Turkish Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadı or Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadyumu ) in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul is the largest football stadium in the country with 75,145 seats and is currently the eighth largest in Europe. The playing field encloses an athletics facility .
geography
Geographical location
The football stadium is located on the Thracian or European side of the metropolis of Istanbul in the Başakşehir district .
Transport links
The metro Istanbul line " M3 " has been leading to the stadium since June 14, 2013 . The lack of public transport connections for a long time made it necessary to have unusually large parking spaces, which are grouped around the facility and further south.
history
Construction began The stadium was for over 135 million in November 1997. US dollars at the bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games opened in the year of 2002.
The roof structure of the stadium resembles a crescent moon and has an area of 18,600 m² and a weight of 3,400 tons. The large pillars of the roof structure are 72 meters high. It covers 70 percent of the audience.
The Ataturk Olympic Stadium was classified as stadium category 4 by the European football association UEFA in 2004 . The football club Galatasaray Istanbul carried out its home games sporadically in the 2003 to 2004 season because of renovation work on their own Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu . The 2004/05 UEFA Champions League final between AC Milan and Liverpool FC was played here on May 25, 2005 . The Istanbul BB was based in the venue from 2007 to 2014. During the construction of Vodafone Park from 2013 to 2016, Beşiktaş Istanbul played its games in the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.
In 2020, the stadium was to host the UEFA Champions League final for the second time . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the final was moved to Lisbon as part of a final tournament . The Istanbul stadium will host the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League final
If Turkey had won the bid for the European Football Championship in 2024 , this could have meant the end of the previous Olympic Stadium. It would have been planned to convert the arena into a pure football stadium with over 92,000 seats. It would be the second largest football stadium in Europe after the Camp Nou . At the beginning of May 2018, the architecture firm AFL Architecs published the first rendered images of the converted arena. The stadium was to be encased in a white exoskeleton made of glass fiber reinforced concrete and equipped with wind capture technology for energy generation. In the first phase, the plans provide for the conversion of the lower tier with the most important facilities such as the players' cabins, followed by the upper tier. The design is based on traditional Turkish hats and works of art.
capacity
The stadium's audience capacity is 75,145 seats including the press, protocol stands and boxes, distributed over four stands: East and marathon stands 27,146 seats, west and main stands 25,522 seats, north and rear stands 11,262 seats and south or south stands. Back gate 11,215 seats.
