Brian Lewis (athlete)

Brian Lewis (born December 5, 1974 in Sacramento , California ) is an American athlete and Olympic champion .

Brian Lewis played baseball early in his career through the ninth grade (his father and brother are professional baseball players). He started athletics because he didn't want to be trained by his father.

Lewis was a member of the American 4 x 100 meter relay , which ended the 1997 World Championships unsuccessfully. At the 1998 Goodwill Games , Lewis was third in the 100-meter run .

In 1999 Lewis became the American 100 meter champion. He was then third runner in the 4 x 100 meter relay that won gold at the World Championships in Seville .

At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, Lewis was also the third runner to win gold medal with the 4 x 100 meter relay. The other runners were: Jon Drummond , Bernard Williams and Maurice Greene .

His best time over 100 meters is 9.99 s (2002) and over 200 meters 20.06 s (2000).
