Until 2012: Beginning in Leverkusen

Da Costa moved from Winfriedia Mülheim to Bayer 04 Leverkusen's youth department in July 2001 . With the Werkself U17 he reached the final of the B-Junioren-Bundesliga at the end of June 2010 , but lost the game 1-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt . Then da Costa moved up to the club's A-youth. Although he still played with the U19s in the A-Junioren-Bundesliga West in the 2010/11 season , he made his debut in the professional team on December 16, 2010 as right full-back in a 1-1 draw in the Europa League match against Atlético Madrid from Bayer 04 Leverkusen; he was substituted on for Gonzalo Castro at the beginning of the second half . On February 24, 2011, he was also used in the 2-0 home win against Metalist Kharkiv in the second leg of the round of 16 second leg of the competition. Da Costa made his Bundesliga debut on September 24th in the 3-0 defeat against FC Bayern Munich and played six times in the league by the end of the season. On February 14, 2012, da Costa was used for the first time in the Champions League in a 3-1 home defeat in the first knockout round match against FC Barcelona .

2012–2017: Four years in Ingolstadt and return to Leverkusen

For the 2012/13 season , da Costa switched to second division club FC Ingolstadt 04 on loan for two seasons . During this time he was used as a regular player in 54 league games. After the loan ended, he was firmly committed to FC Ingolstadt and da Costa signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2017, whereby Leverkusen secured a buyback option one year before the contract expired. In the 2014/15 season he was on the field for the full length of the first 11 league games. On October 31, 2014, the 12th matchday, da Costa suffered an open broken tibia during the game against Fortuna Düsseldorf and was out for nine months. At the end of the season he rose to the Bundesliga as a second division champion with Ingolstadt. In the new season , da Costa made his comeback on August 9, 2015 in the DFB Cup match against SpVgg Unterhaching . In the Bundesliga he made 20 appearances in the season and achieved relegation with his team.

At the beginning of May 2016, Leverkusen activated the buyback option anchored in da Costa's contract and signed the player at the beginning of the 2016/17 season . He made his comeback in the team on December 3, 2016 in the league game against SC Freiburg with a substitution at halftime for Benjamin Henrichs . Da Costa was unable to earn the regular position at Bayer Leverkusen that he achieved in Ingolstadt. He was in 17 of 44 possible competitive games in the squad and was used in 4 games (3 in the Bundesliga, one in the Champions League), one of which was in the starting line-up. In the last league game of the season against Hertha BSC , he assisted in his team's 6-2 victory.

Since 2017: Breakthrough in Frankfurt

For the 2017/18 season , da Costa moved to league rivals Eintracht Frankfurt and signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2021. After playing briefly on the first two Bundesliga matchdays, he tore a tendon in his right rear thigh during training in mid-September 2017, which forced him to take a three-month break. On his comeback on December 20, 2017, he prepared the 2-1 winner in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup against 1. FC Heidenheim . Afterwards, da Costa also drew attention to himself with good performances and became a regular player under coach Niko Kovač in February 2018 . On March 3, 2018, da Costa scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 1-0 home win against Hannover 96 . In May 2018 he stood with Eintracht in the DFB Cup final against FC Bayern Munich . Da Costa prepared for Ante Rebić's 2-1 lead with a long ball, helping his team to a 3-1 win and their first title win in 30 years.

Due to the cup success, he and his team qualified for the group stage of the Europa League , in which da Costa was called in by new coach Adi Hütter in every game and secured a place in the round of 32 with his team as group winners . In the second group game, the 4-1 home win against Lazio Rome on October 4, 2018, he scored two goals in one game for the first time in his professional career. After victories against Shakhtar Donetsk , Inter Milan and Benfica Lisbon, the team advanced to the semi-finals and failed on penalties at Chelsea . Also in the Bundesliga, da Costa did not miss a game in the 2018/19 season and was only twice not on the field for the full season. In December 2018, da Costa extended his contract in Frankfurt prematurely by one year until 2022. In January 2019, kicker sports magazine classified it as an international class in its biannual ranking of German football .

In the 2019/20 season , da Costa lost his regular place to Almamy Touré and, especially after a system change at the beginning of 2020, was only used as a substitute.

National team

Da Costa went from the U17 national team to all youth teams of the DFB . In total, he was used in 33 games up to the U21 , in which he scored 2 goals.
