from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David Berger, 2011

David Berger (born March 8, 1968 in Würzburg ) is a publicist and Roman Catholic theologian . His theological work focuses on the history and doctrine of Thomism . From 2013 to 2015 Berger worked as editor-in-chief of the German-language monthly magazine Men for Gays. Among other things, he runs the blog Philosophia perennis and was a member of the board of trustees of the AfD-affiliated Desiderius Erasmus Foundation .

Life

Berger studied philosophy , theology and German literature in Würzburg, Cologne and Dortmund from 1991 to 1998 . In 1998 he did his doctorate in philosophy with theologian Thomas Ruster . Berger received the shared dissertation prize from the University of Dortmund for the social sciences, philosophy and theology department and then taught from 1998 to 1999 at the theological training facility of the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus and Mary (SJM) in Blindenmarkt ( Lower Austria ) in the diocese of St. Pölten . During his legal clerkship , he has been teaching fundamental theology in their Blindenmarkt training center since 2000 . In 2010 he distanced himself from the community.

Together with Rudolf Michael Schmitz ( Institute of Christ King and High Priest ) he founded the yearbook Doctor Angelicus in 2000/2001 . In January 2001 he was appointed Socio Corrispondente of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas and on September 25, 2003 Berger was given the status of “Corresponding Professor” of this academy; In the same year he became Vice President of the newly founded Deutsche Thomas-Gesellschaft e. V.

In 2005, Berger completed his habilitation with his book Thomism. Major leitmotifs of the Thomistic synthesis and their topicality for the present in the subject of dogmatics at the Catholic University of Lublin in Poland. In 2005 he was invested as a knight of the Polish Order of Knights of the Mother of God of Jasna Góra, founded in 1991 (Polish: Stowarzyszenie Rycerstwa Orderu Jasnogórskiej Bogarodzicy ). According to Berger, he returned this title in July 2007, albeit without open protest against what he later described as conservatism and homophobia of certain Polish politicians close to this knightly order.

In autumn 2007, the support group of the magazine Theologisches Berger again expressed its confidence and confirmed him in his office after, according to Bergers description, attempts had been made for months in certain traditionalist circles to oust him as editor.

In May 2009, Berger was appointed lecturer of the Pontifical Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith with the task of overseeing two theological journals.

At the end of March 2010, the allegations from 2007 became topical again, as Berger's Facebook profile "clearly shows that he is rooted in a homosexual milieu". Before a "clarifying discussion" set up by the board of the sponsoring association, Berger resigned his position as editor of the magazine Theologisches , but protested against the allegations made by Manfred Hauke , before commenting on an article he had written on April 23, 2010 outed as homosexual in the Frankfurter Rundschau . The decisive or final reason for his coming out, according to Berger, was a statement by Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck regarding the sinfulness of homosexuality on the TV program Anne Will . In July 2010, the status of “Corresponding Professor” in the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas was revoked.

Immediately after the publication of his book Der heilige Schein (November 2010), the Archdiocese of Cologne checked whether his teaching license as a religion teacher should be withdrawn. On May 2, 2011, the Archbishop of Cologne withdrew this from him with immediate effect. This led to protests among the students and their parents and a demonstration march to the archbishop's official residence in Cologne, in which around 400 to 500 students took part.

Berger is now "in protest ... from the Roman Catholic Church as a public corporation leaked ", considers himself but continues as a Catholic.

Between 2011 and 2013 he worked as a freelance journalist a. a. for Die Tageszeitung (taz), the weekly newspaper Die Zeit and the magazines Cicero and Vice . From May 1, 2013, Berger was editor-in-chief of the lifestyle magazine Men published by Bruno Gmünder Verlag . In a controversial contribution in May 2013, he called for the exclusion of " homophobes " from talk shows . He has since officially withdrawn this position on The European . Referring to the author Akif Pirinçci , whose statements in the book Die große Verschwulung he criticized as homophobic, he called for freedom of expression and freedom of the press even for authors who are politically incorrect .

In December 2014, Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe stopped its advertisements in men because the magazine, under Berger's leadership, was "increasingly contributing to exclusion and discrimination" and was thus "in contradiction to the principles of HIV prevention in Germany". Berger propagates a “traditional image of masculinity” and thus devalues people who do not correspond to this image. He also provokes “with some right-wing populist statements”.

On February 1, 2015, Berger was dismissed as editor-in-chief by men without notice. In justifying this step, the publisher emphasized political differences with Berger. Of queer media Bergers opinions were even then regarded as very populist.

Shortly after his discharge from men , Berger became editor-in-chief of the Internet portal Gaystream, which he founded with his partner .

He has lived in Berlin with his long-term partner since August 2012.

Political activity

Berger was a member of the CDU from September 2016 to February 2018 . In the run-up to the 2017 federal election , however, he confessed to being a voter for the AfD . In 2018 he was appointed to the board of trustees of the AfD-affiliated Desiderius Erasmus Foundation . In the early summer of 2019, he left the Foundation's Board of Trustees and cited differences with Foundation President Erika Steinbach as the reason. In September 2019, he criticized the appointment of representatives of the Schnellroda Institute for State Policy of the right-wing publisher Götz Kubitschek to the Foundation Board.

Theological field of activity

David Berger is a representative of Neuthomism and for a time was considered a vehement opponent of the theology of Karl Rahner and his students. From 2001 until its last edition in 2007, Berger was the editor of the International Thomistic Yearbook Doctor Angelicus, which he co-founded . From 2003 to 2010 he was also editor and editor of the magazine Theologisches: Katholische Monatsschrift, founded by Wilhelm Schamoni .

David Berger himself commented on the relevance of Thomism a. a. as follows: “The doctrine of the holy teacher offers less detailed patent recipes for individual questions to be solved. What it has to say to us with regard to the future of the church and theology, which we are to help shape, goes far beyond short-term instructions for action. They are, so to speak, fundamental attitudes or leitmotifs which, precisely because they show us a real alternative to the leitmotifs prevailing in society, church and theology, are extremely topical for the new century. Perhaps one can say that there was never a time when the call of the Ite ad Thomam church: Go to Thomas was as relevant as it is today ”.

Regarding Berger's contributions against Rahner's theology, Rahner's pupil Herbert Vorgrimler said: “Berger is right with every means, his moral inhibition threshold is always lower. He is subject to the instinctual compulsion to hunt Rahner and those who stick to Rahner. His illness is 'getting ready', having to be insulted and insulted. ”Berger has now put his criticism of Rahner into perspective.

Since coming out and the publication of his book Der heilige Schein , Berger has primarily dealt critically with the attitude of the Catholic Church to homosexuality. At the closing rally of the protests against the Pope's visit in Berlin in September 2011, he was one of the speakers. Here he criticized the doctrine of natural law presented by the Pope in the Bundestag as philosophically obsolete and saw in it the basis for homophobic attitudes.

Discussion with kreuz.net

Berger has been in office since Pope Benedict XVI. as an opponent of a "vulgar traditionalism" located by him in the Priestly Society of St. Pius X. and on the right-wing extremist blog kreuz.net and suspected connections between the controversial website and the Priestly Society; However, on the basis of more recent information, he revised this assumption in October 2012 and assumes that people in the church service are behind kreuz.net. Berger was threatened in life and limb several times on kreuz.net.

In October 2012, Berger took over the coordination of a " bounty campaign " initiated by the Bruno Gmünder Verlag , with the intention of identifying the operators of kreuz.net with the aim of their final conviction in return for a reward of over 15,000 euros . He advocates the thesis that kreuz.net reflected the conservative turn of the Catholic Church in an extreme form. While the German Bishops 'Conference did not support this campaign, the Roman Catholic Church in Austria and the Swiss Bishops' Conference worked together with Berger. In autumn 2012 connections between kreuz.net and the network of catholic priests emerged.

On December 2, 2012, kreuz.net went offline for reasons that were not previously known to the public. The Süddeutsche Zeitung saw this as the merit of Berger and the “Stop kreuz.net” campaign that he coordinated.

In 2014, the Bruno Gmünder Group filed for bankruptcy , but announced that the premium that was suspended was not part of the bankruptcy estate and was therefore still available for payment. In December 2014 it was reported that, on the one hand, Gmünder Verlag had never paid its share of the premium, that half of the donations were used as a fee for David Berger, and that the remainder had gone into the publisher's bankruptcy estate. The publisher's founder, Bruno Gmünder, assured that his share of € 10,000 would still be available as a reward to the person who led to the conviction of the kreuz.net operator.

Comments on Benedict XVI.

Berger has stated several times that he had a homosexual disposition from Pope Benedict XVI. go out, which this tries to cover up with homophobic statements. In an interview with the daily newspaper on November 30, 2012, Berger stated that there was "no New Year's address by the Pope where he not only indirectly describes homosexuals as second-class people and where homosexual tendencies are demonized".

In this context, the journalist Alexander Kissler wrote in the magazine The European on December 4, 2012 that Berger was writing the untruth in this regard and, with his criticism of the Pope, crossed the line of abuse. Of the seven New Year's addresses Benedict XVI. three had no relation to marriage or same-sex issues; The remaining four speeches contained brief information on family policy.

In August 2016, Berger asked Benedict XVI. to apologize for his publicly expressed suspicion of the homosexuality of the Pope at the time and declared that he had relied on "dubious studies". He assumes that the Pope strictly adhered to celibacy and did not have sex. His statements about the Pope's sexuality were not a real outing . He regrets that he can "no longer catch and retrieve" what has been said. In the same article, Berger accused Pope Francis of seriously damaging the papacy .

Book of the holy glow

In his book Der heilige Schein: als gay theologian in the Catholic Church , which already saw three editions within the first six weeks of its publication, Berger critically analyzes the way the Catholic Church deals with homosexuality .

He notes an increasing homophobia in the Catholic Church. The number of homosexually inclined Catholic priests is disproportionately high, their disposition, which has been explicitly condemned as inadmissible by the church teaching office since 2005, is used by church superiors to keep these priests as loyal as possible, i.e. conservative in the context of the time.

Berger's book has strong autobiographical traits in that it provides an insight into a certain phase of his life. In doing so, he sheds light on his own previous behavior and his affiliation to ultra-conservative Catholic circles, which he has since turned his back on, in a self-critical manner and in the style of a reappraisal.

The journalist Christian Geyer wrote: "So much seems to be clear to me for the moral theological assessment of homosexuality: With the mixture of discretion and repression, the Vatican does not get any further after this book."

In his review in Die Zeit , Thomas Assheuer counted “this book [...] as the most unbelievable thing that can be read about the Catholic Church at the moment”, but after reading it he was at a loss: The right theologian Berger has a steep slope in the church He had a career, loathed liberal church representatives and loved the “liturgical magic” of the Tridentine mass , but turned away from relevant right-wing circles such as Opus Dei , the Engelwerk and the Pius Brothers in his book . It remains unclear how representative Berger's experiences are.

The theologian Manfred Hauke , in his capacity as chairman of the support group of the magazine Theologisches , described the book as a " diatribe " in a statement dated January 15, 2011 . He pointed out to Berger that in his work he was now projecting the “holy glow” he had lived for a long time onto other people. He also never criticized the Church or the Pope in his previous publications, but now he does so all the more violently and polemically. Berger's way of life was "shaped by lies and pretense". Berger also made inaccurate claims about the magazine in his book and wrongly insinuated that the sponsoring community knew about his "lifestyle that did not correspond to the teaching of the Church" and used this knowledge to put him under pressure. Hauke called on the readers of the magazine to pray that Berger would turn away from his “wrong turns” and lead a life “that corresponds to the dignity of a Catholic Christian”.

Debate about Felix Rexhausen

On March 27, 2014, at the request of the Federation of Lesbian and Gay Journalists , the city of Cologne decided to name a place at Cologne Central Station after the writer and co-founder of the German section of Amnesty International , Felix Rexhausen . In May 2015, the designation was suspended after Berger reproached Rexhausen for having made positive comments about pedophilia in 1969 . The Association of Lesbian and Gay Journalists contradicted Berger's account, the Green politician Volker Beck demanded an investigation into the allegations against Rexhausen. After Berger's allegations were examined, it was decided to inaugurate the square on December 10, 2015, as the Berger's allegations "vanished into thin air", as the responsible district mayor said.

Attitude to Islam

Since 2016, Berger has increasingly positioned himself against what he calls the Islamization of Europe and has also been generally critical of Islam . In this context, he accused the German bishops and Pope Francis of ingratiating to Islam , among other things in the new right Junge Freiheit . They betrayed the Jews and Christians in the Middle East and showed a "decadent lust for doom". In connection with Islam, Berger stated that the Alternative for Germany appears to be the most progressive party in dealing with this religion.

In 2016, Berger wrote in the Querfront magazine Compact by right-wing journalist Jürgen Elsässer about the “suppression of Muslim homo-hatred”. Berger himself explained in an article in Die Zeit that his criticism of Islam was the reason why Jakob Augstein et al. a. is referred to as “right”: “Since the publication of my book Der Heilige Schein in autumn 2010, I have been considered a liberal church critic, to whom Spiegel and Zeit repeatedly gave space for interviews. Der Spiegel praised that I had 'demanded an end to church gay discrimination'. So am I a liberal? Or a right-wing radical? In fact, some journalists' ardent love for me has grown cold, and Augstein also gives an indication of why. He criticizes the fact that my blog speaks of 'Islamists throwing homosexuals off the roof'. As a matter of fact. At some point I began to castigate homophobia not only in Christianity but also in Islam. That was the turning point. Now I received criticism from the left and advanced from an enlightening model homo to the Islamophobic right. "

On the right-wing extremist blog PI-News , Berger wrote on the subject of "Cyber-Jihad" about a guide that the company Facebook had published together with a British Islamic organization and which showed how Muslims can protect themselves from and react to anti-Islamic attacks . Berger accused this guide of an Islamist background, but did not provide any evidence and incorrectly cited the only study used in the 19-page brochure. In addition, he did not mention that it warned against terrorist recruitment attempts.

After the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in April 2019, Berger tweeted: “There won't be much left of Notre Dame. The collapse under the flames is symbolic of France and the whole of the West . Another step towards Eurabia ”. Berger countered indications of ongoing construction work as the cause of the fire by stating that Cologne Cathedral was also being constantly renovated. However, Cologne Cathedral has a steel roof structure, whereas Notre-Dame is a timber framework structure.

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , Berger interpreted the announcement by the city of Berlin that it would again allow religious events subject to conditions from May 3, 2020, to the effect that this was "an impressive sign of which religious community the future in Germany belongs". In doing so, he suggested that these gatherings would be allowed again during the Islamic month of fasting Ramadan , while Christians were not previously allowed to hold church services at Easter.

Attitude to same-sex marriage

On June 30, 2017, a Johannes Gabriel published an article against same-sex marriage on Berger's blog Philosophia perennis , which was often perceived as homophobic and triggered a shit storm. The article was also published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung under the same pseudonym . The FAZ distanced itself on Twitter from the content of the article, which only reflects the opinion of the guest author, but not that of the newspaper. When asked whether "Johannes Gabriel" was Berger's own pseudonym, the latter claimed the importance of " digging up the strategies of 'inner emigration' ". Berger later deleted the tweet. The FAZ was accused of having ascribed a fictional biography to its guest author . The newspaper had portrayed "Gabriel" as a philosopher and psychologist who supports non-governmental organizations . According to press reports, Berger had attracted attention in the recent past with right-wing populist theses . In July 2017, Berger stated that he was not the author of the article. On September 14, 2017, the German Press Council issued a public reprimand for the text.
