The FC Empoli (officially: Empoli Football Club SpA , shortly Empoli FC ) is an Italian football club from the Tuscan town of Empoli .

The traditional club color is azure blue. The club plays its home games in the 16,800-seat Stadio Carlo Castellani .

history

In August 1920, the FC Empoli and the football department of the US Empolese were founded, after the tournament in San Miniato , in which the clubs had competed against each other, the two football clubs merged into one, and subsequently took over the name of Empoli Football Club. In the 1921 season, the club took part in a championship for the first time, but for financial reasons not, as originally planned, in the highest Tuscan championship, but only in the third highest. The club subsequently remained a provincial club that took part in the third and second highest championship in Tuscany.

In September 1931 the club was renamed Associazione Sportiva Fascista Empoli , five years later it was renamed Dopolavoro Empoli , now in the highest regional league. In the season 1937/38 Dopolavoro Empoli played his first season as a professional team in the Series C . In August 1938 the name was changed again to Dopolavoro Interaziendale Italo Gambaccioni Sezione Calcio .

Only three years later, in September 1941, the club was renamed again, this time AC Empoli , another three years later the club was given its final name FC Empoli in November - after the name Gruppo Sportivo Azelio Landi as a new name in October was in conversation.

In 1945/46, FC Empoli rose to Serie B for the first time , but was relegated five years later. Another five years later, in the 1955/56 season, he was even relegated to Serie D (which was then called Serie IV ). It took six seasons before FC Empoli could return to Serie C.

In 1982/83 the club rose to Serie B for the second time in club history. Only three years later, they celebrated the first promotion to the Serie A . There you could only hold your position for two years and will be passed on from Serie A to Serie C1 .

In 1995/96 Empoli defeated Monza in the play-offs of Serie C1 and Como twice with 1-0 each and returned to Serie B. This season he was also promptly promoted to Serie A.

In recent years Empoli has become a classic elevator team that constantly commutes between the top two Italian leagues. In the 2004/05 season, FC Empoli managed to return to the top Italian division. In the end, relegation was clearly achieved in Serie A with eleventh place in the table. As a result of the verdict of the manipulation scandal , it was even enough for eighth place in the table. In 2006/07, the club achieved an excellent seventh place in the table and qualified directly for the UEFA Cup . There, however, the team was defeated by FC Zurich in the first round and had to be relegated to Serie B in 18th place in the table in the same year. There Empoli achieved fifth place in 2008/09 and failed in the play-off at Brescia Calcio . It was only in the 2013/14 season that they returned to Serie A, where FC Empoli was able to assert itself in the following season .
