← European Champion Clubs' Cup 1975/76 |
The 1976/77 European Cup was the 22nd edition of the competition and was won for the first time by Liverpool FC in the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach . 32 club teams took part, including 31 national champions from the previous season and with FC Bayern Munich the three-time defending champions who failed in the quarter-finals at Dynamo Kiev . The venue for the final was the Olympic Stadium in Rome on May 25, 1977 .
It was only the second title win by an English team, but five more should follow in a row. Including this, Liverpool reached five finals in nine years, of which he won four.
mode
The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the case of a tie, the higher number of goals scored away counted first; if there was also a tie, the second leg was extended and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out was played immediately afterwards.
