The First Division 1968/69 was the 54th season in the history of the highest Maltese football league . The Hibernians Paola became champion for the third time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC Birkirkara and Gżira United replaced the relegated FC Msida Saint Joseph and FC Qormi . Birkirkara was represented in the House of Lords for the first time since the 1965/66 season and Gżira for the first time since the 1964/65 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played around the championship, international starting places and relegation places. The last two placed had to be relegated to the Second Division.
