The Football League Third Division 1971/72 was the 45th season of the Football League Third Division as the third highest English football league . Third division champion was Aston Villa and also the second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion rose to the Football League Second Division . In the following third division season 1972/73, the two second division clubs Charlton Athletic and FC Watford, ranked in the table below, took the places for the two promoted teams . Mansfield Town , Barnsley FC , Torquay United and Bradford City had to relegate from the Third Division to the Football League Fourth Division . Instead of these clubs, the fourth division champions Grimsby Town and behind them Southend United , FC Brentford and Scunthorpe United took the vacant positions in the following season 1972/73 .
