Friuli Grave

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Friuli Grave wine-growing region is located in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . The wines produced here have had the status of a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC for short) since 1970 and are sold as red , rosé and white wines . The production regulations were last modified on March 7, 2014. The name is etymologically derived, similar to that of Graves in Bordeaux, from the predominant gravel (French: Gravier ) and stony soil of the alluvial cones in the river valleys of Judrio , Livenza , Meduna , Natisone , Tagliamento and Torre . The stones store the sun's heat during the day and release it back into the environment.

Cultivation

73,800 hectoliters of DOC wine were produced here in 2017. The Prosecco zone is even larger - but it also extends into the Veneto region.

The zone covers an area with around a hundred parishes. The DOC area Friuli Grave geographically consists of parts of the former provinces of Pordenone and Udine .

The area belonging to the former province of Pordenone lies in the western part of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, from the foot of the mountain ranges to the sea, and is bordered by the Tagliamento rivers in the east and Livenza in the west on the border with the Veneto region . Beyond this regional border lies the Lison Pramaggiore wine-growing region .

The area belonging to the former province of Udine extends from the plain on the Tagliamento river to the DOCs Colli Orientali del Friuli and Collio Goriziano, which adjoin to the east . In the south, the wine-growing region borders the DOCs Friuli Latisana , Friuli-Annia , Friuli Aquileia and Isonzo .

Grape varieties
In the DOC area Friuli-Grave 14 single-variety red and white wines as well as one rosé wine are pressed.

All wines that do not have the name Bianco, Rosso, Rosato or Novello must have the name "Friuli Grave ..." followed by the respective grape variety. The wines must contain 95% of the grape variety concerned.

Autochthonous grape varieties
Only rediscovered old grape varieties from Friuli grow in test vineyards with a total size of seven hectares. These are varieties such as the Piculìt-Neri (probably the vinum pucinum, which the ancient Romans already drank), Scjalin (probably named after the vine "Schiavolino", the little Schiava ), Forgiarin (the name comes from the little one Forgaria village), Cividin (the grape was documented as early as the 17th century), Cjanorie (from the Gemona area) and Ucelùt (belongs to the so-called Uccelline grape family). In 1991 the Forgiarìn, Piculìt-Neri, Scjalìn and Ucelùt varieties were added to the national
list of varieties .
