Gerhard "Gerd" Müller (born August 25, 1955 in Krumbach , Swabia ) is a German politician ( CSU ). Since December 2013 he has been Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development in the Merkel III and Merkel IV cabinets .

Study and job

After attending secondary school , Müller first did a commercial apprenticeship. On the second educational path he made up his Abitur and, after completing his military service with a scholarship from the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung , studied pedagogy , psychology, and political and economic sciences at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt , which he graduated as a business education teacher finished.

In 1980, Müller began his professional activity as managing director of an association, but later joined the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, where he last worked as a senior government councilor in the policy department and as deputy press spokesman for the Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Anton Jaumann, until 1989. In 1988, Müller received his doctorate from the University of Regensburg with a dissertation on Die Junge Union Bayern and its contribution to political youth and adult education . In 2014, allegations of plagiarism were raised against Müller. However, the University of Regensburg declared after an examination that "the suspicion of scientific misconduct spread in the press" was lacking a basis.

Political party

Müller initially got involved in the Junge Union , where he was district chairman in Swabia from 1982 to 1991 and Bavarian state chairman from 1987 to 1991 . In this capacity, he demanded the death penalty for drug traffickers in 1989 . He later distanced himself from this demand. When the news chief and CSU party friend Heinz Klaus Mertes made sure that this was euphemistically presented in the BR news as a “demand for harsher punishments” on Bayerischer Rundfunk , this led to allegations of party-politically motivated news suppression.

Since 1993 he has been deputy chairman of the CSU district association in Swabia.

MP

From 1989 to 1994, Müller was a member of the European Parliament and during this time he was Parliamentary Director of the EPP Group .

Since 1994 Müller has been a member of the German Bundestag for the constituency of Oberallgäu (Kempten, Lindau, Oberallgäu and Westallgäu). Until 2005 he was, among other things, foreign and European policy spokesman and deputy chairman of the CSU regional group in the German Bundestag. In addition, from 2002 to 2005 he was Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Tourism and Tourism in the Bundestag. In the 2005 Bundestag election he received 61.5% of the first votes . In the Bundestag election 2009 the result was 53%, in the Bundestag election 2013 he received 60.7% of the first votes. Most recently he was re-elected in the 2017 federal election with 50.4% of the first votes.

Public offices

From 1978 to 1988 Müller was second mayor of Krumbach and district councilor in the district of Günzburg . During this time, Müller called for the death penalty for drug traffickers and campaigned against abortion.

On November 22, 2005, Müller was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection in the federal government led by Chancellor Angela Merkel . Like the Merkel I cabinet , he was also a member of the Merkel II cabinet .

On December 17, 2013, Müller was appointed Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development in the Merkel III cabinet. Unlike Merkel and Federal President Gauck, Müller demonstratively refused to personally participate in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in protest against social and ecological upheavals. He feared "a disaster similar to that in South Africa: billion- dollar investments degenerate into ruins , and next to it the population is starving in misery." According to him, Brazil stands for street football . But not for such a “type of major event” from which “a large part of the population has nothing at all”. He expressly directed his criticism to FIFA . For the soccer World Cup in Qatar in 2022 , Müller even fears an increase in the "materialistic spectacle".

The actions of the federal government and the European Union to cope with the refugee crisis were criticized by Müller as inadequate. "When I look at the European Council meeting yesterday in Luxembourg, where we are discussing gender problems and the refugee issue is almost irrelevant, then I wonder what is on the European agenda now?" Müller told Bayerischer Rundfunk . “We have to act, at the municipal, state, federal and European level.” In addition, Müller repeatedly calls for a Marshall Plan with Africa , also to counter migration movements. But Müller also points out that it was Europeans who migrated for a long time.

Before the UN climate conference in Paris 2015, Müller called for a new United Nations Sustainability Council to be created , which would report annually on the implementation of national climate protection plans. He called for the binding implementation of the resolutions.

On March 14, 2018, Gerd Müller was reappointed Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development in the Merkel IV cabinet by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier . Under him, the ministry's expenditure increased from 6 to 10 billion euros annually.

Müller initiated the Green Button , a textile seal that has been in use since 2019 and is intended to represent minimum standards in textile production.

Memberships and honorary positions

In his youth, Müller was a member of the Catholic rural youth movement (KLJB) . From 2008 to 2012 he was President of the German Spa Association , and since 2009 he has been honorary professor for international agricultural policy at the Dresden University of Technology and Economics . Müller is a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group of the German Bundestag and an elected member of the Central Committee of German Catholics . He is also the patron of "1000 schools for our world", a joint initiative of the municipal umbrella organizations in Germany.

Müller is a Roman Catholic , married and has two children.
