Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense , Grêmio for short ( German  "Gilde" ) and generally known in German-speaking countries as Grêmio Porto Alegre , is a football club from Porto Alegre , the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . The club gained international fame when it won the Copa Libertadores twice and the World Cup once in the 1980s and 1990s .

The home stadium is the Arena do Grêmio , which has 60,540 seats. It was opened on December 8, 2012 as part of a friendly game in which Gremio faced German Bundesliga club Hamburger SV and won 2-1. From 1954 to 2012 Gremio played most of his home games at the Estádio Olímpico Monumental . The team plays in the blue and black striped home dress, away in the white dress with blue and black stripes.

history

On September 7, 1903, a soccer match of the Sport Club Rio Grande , the first Brazilian soccer club, took place in Porto Alegre . One of the spectators was Cândido Dias, an entrepreneur from Sorocaba . When the ball ran out of air during the game, Dias, the only one in Porto Alegre at the time, loaned it to the players. Dias was so enthusiastic about the game that after the match he asked the players about their club and how to set up one.

On September 15, 1903, Cândido Dias met 31 other people in the Salão Grau restaurant and founded the Grêmio football club. Carlos Luiz Bohrer was elected the first club president.

In April 1909 the SC Internacional was founded in Porto Alegre , and on July 18, 1909 a game was played that Gremio won 10-0 against SC Internacional. Back then there was no rivalry between the two clubs, but today the Gremistas (Gremio fans) remember this victory with great pride.

In 1919 Gremio was one of the founders of the Rio Grande do Sul Sports Association ( Fundação Rio-Grandense de Desportes ). In 1921 the club won the state championship for the first time, the Campeonato Gaúcho .

On May 19, 1935 Gremio won a game against FC Santos and was the first team from Rio Grande do Sul to win against a " Paulista " team (a club from São Paulo).

On May 3, 1981 Gremio won the Brazilian championship for the first time after defeating São Paulo FC in the final.

In 1983 the first international title was achieved. In the final of the Copa Libertadores , Peñarol from Uruguay was beaten. In the same year Gremio won the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Hamburger SV .

In 1989 Gremio won the first ever Copa do Brasil in the final against Sport Recife . Legendary among the Gremistas is the 6-1 win in the semi-final second leg against Flamengo .

The club had to relegate to Serie B in 1991 after a very bad season, but returned to Serie A in 1993.

In 1995 the Copa Libertadores was won again. The coach at the time was Luiz Felipe Scolari , opponent in the final Atlético Nacional Medellin from Colombia. In the World Cup game, however, Gremio had to admit defeat to Ajax Amsterdam on penalties .

On December 15, 1996, Gremio scored the second Brazilian championship title after beating Portuguesa in the final .

After the 2004 season ended last, Gremio rose for the second time in Serie B. On November 26, 2005, Gremio beat in a dramatic game in which four Gremio players were excluded, Náutico Capibaribe 1-0 and won the Serie B championship. Since the 2006 season, Gremio plays again in Serie A and won promptly both 2006 and 2007 the Campeonato Gaúcho .

In the Copa Libertadores 2007 Gremio was able to reach the final, but had to admit defeat to the Boca Juniors .

On July 17, 2007, the team should fly with the TAM-Linhas-Aéreas flight 3054 to an away game in São Paulo. At the last minute, however, the booking was changed and the team escaped an airplane accident in which 199 people, including a former president of local rivals SC Internacional , were killed. The following years were characterized by moderate sporting success until winning the Copa do Brasil 2016 . Only in 2010 was Gremio able to win the regional state championship. To the annoyance of the fans, the biggest rival SC Internacional experienced its most successful phase in sporting terms from 2011-2016, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2006 and 2010 , winning the Copa Sudamericana in 2008 and winning the national championship.

Although the club was able to classify itself more frequently for the Copa Libertadores, title wins failed to materialize, which led to frequent coach changes at Gremio in the 2010s. Well-known coaches came regularly: On February 21, 2012, the club announced that Vanderlei Luxemburgo had signed a one-year contract as a coach, which was then extended. But on June 29, 2013, the club announced its dismissal. He was succeeded as coach for the second time in his career by Renato Portaluppi, also known as Renato Gaúcho . His second term did not last long, but thanks to his footballing achievements, he still enjoyed a good reputation among fans and officials. After coaches such as Enderson Moreira, Luiz Felipe Scolari and Roger Machado had held the sporting responsibility in the meantime , Portaluppi took over the coaching position for the third time in 2016.

In his third term in office, the club was able to build on the successes of the 1980s and 1990s. By winning the Copa do Brasil 2016 , Grêmio qualified for Copa Libertadores 2017 . After the club finished the group stage as first in the table, they made it to the finals after victories over CD Godoy Cruz , Botafogo FR and Barcelona Sporting Club . In the final, CA Lanús was defeated 3-1 in total (1-0 in the first leg in Porto Alegre and 1: 2 in the second leg from Grêmio's point of view in Buenos Aires). This was the third time that the club won the Copa Libertadores. Gremio's striker Luan Vieira was named the best player of the tournament . Renato Portaluppi was one of the few players to win the Libertadores both as a player and as a coach. With the win, he underpinned his cult status with the fans of the club. With the triumph, Gremio qualified for the third time for the FIFA Club World Cup . After the Mexican club CF Pachuca were defeated 1-0 in extra time in the semi-finals , the final was lost 1-0 to Real Madrid .
